Fundamental Concepts of Integral Calculus
Introduction
In the last module, we examined some of the fundamental concepts of differential calculus, while in this module we consider some of the high points of the other major part of calculus, integral calculus . In a sense, integration , or determining the integral of a function, is the reverse of differentiation , or finding the derivative. For example, we can integrate the rate of change function for the amount of a radioactive substance to determine the total amount of decay over a period of time. The material in this module is needed for some elective sections in the remainder of the text. While the concept of rate of change from the previous module is essential to understanding the remainder of the text, the concepts of the current module are extremely important for higher-level computational science but are optional for this introduction to the subject.
Total Distance Traveled and Area
Suppose a car travels along a straight expressway for 2 hours at a constant velocity of 65 km/hr. How far does go in that time? Clearly, the answer is (2 hr)(65 km/hr) = 130 km. Figure 1 gives the graph of this velocity function v f t ) = 65. Notice that the total distance traveled is the area under this curve from

Lecturer: Dr B L Davies Recommended books:
Course text
Additional reading:
Fundamentals of Differential Equations, R F Nagle and E B Saff, Addison Wesley, 1993, ISBN 080535056X, (QA371.N24). Aims:
This module aims to impart skill in the handling of the procedures of differential and integral calculus, and in the methods of ordinary differential equations. Objectives: At the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Use the standard techniques of calculus.
  • Recognise various types of first order ordinary differential equations.
  • Apply recipes for their solution.
  • Use various methods for dealing with linear differential equations of second and higher orders.
Summary:
This course revises and builds on the student's knowledge of calculus from 'A'-level, and develops the ability to handle the rules and procedures of differentiation and integration as applied to the standard mathematical functions. The second section of the module develops the methods of solution of ordinary differential equations of the first and second order, listing the procedures and indicating some applications. Pre-requisites: A-level Mathematics.

BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY

As a consequence of both the information-rich environment and the technological capabilities, business continues to move away from a fixed curriculum, toward a system of providing information and instruction when it is needed. In December 12, 1994's issue of Maclean's , an article referring to a new "Corporate Culture Club" describes different industries and how they are changing their expectation of workers. The corporate sector has realized that survival depends on a work force that is capable of knowledge building. The role of educators should be to prepare graduates for this rapidly changing work force. In the community college system the process for this change began in 1988, with a request to develop a vision of the college system by the turn of the century. After an extensive process of research, consultation and debate across the system, the report, Vision 2000: Quality and Opportunity CONSTRUCTIVIST APPROACH TO LEARNING
In the constructivist view, the learner is building an internal representation of knowledge and a personal interpretation of experience. No meaningful construction nor authentic activity is possible if all relevant information is pre specified. What is meaningful is the development of learning environments which encourage construction of understanding multiple perspectives. This is in contrast to the typical school environment where the goal is to transfer knowledge to the learner in the most efficient, effective manner possible. The present school system suffers from discrete divisions of knowledge for convenience rather than laying a foundation for further knowledge building.

  • Fundamental Thm of Calculus ... (top of page) Antiderivatives The derivative f'(x) is used to calculate the slope, or rate of change, of a function f(x). But what is the function f(x) the derivative OF? Or, if you prefer better grammar, describe a function F(x) having F'(x) = f(x). Such a function F(x) is called an antiderivative of f(x).
Example: What function has a derivative of x^3 ? We know the deriv goes dowm one
    power, and we might think: (x^4) = 4 x^3. But we want x^3 not 4 x^3.
    How do we avoid the 4? Put a 1/4 at the beginning to wait and pounce on the 4 when we do the derivative. Thus if F(x) = (1/4) x^4 , we get F (x) = (1/4) 4 x^3 = x^3 = f(x).
    Actually F(x) could be (1/4) x^4 + c for any constant c, and F (x) would still be x^3.
