Skip to Navigation Literature on the Web : A Home Emile Zola A journalist turned novelist, Zola is probably best known for the courageous stand he took when he published his open letter entitled "J'Accuse". The article, declaring the innocence of an army officer framed and convicted of treason, resulted in Zola's own conviction of libel, exile and bankruptcy. Though Zola died before it was over, the press sensation caused the officer's case to be reopened. The man was later exonerated, and freed from Devil's Island. After his first major novel, Thérèse Raquin (1867), he began the long series called Les Rougon-Macquart, a sequence of 20 books described in the subtitle as "the natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire'. French author, who founded the naturalist movement. Zola was born in Paris on April 2, 1840, the son of an Italian civil engineer. After his father's early death, he grew up in poverty. His first job was as a clerk in a publishing house. After 1865 he was able to support himself by writing verse, short stories, and literary and art criticism. In January 1898, Zola wrote an open letter, published in the Paris newspaper L'Aurore. This was the famous "J'accuse" ("I accuse") letter, in which Zola attacked French officials for their persecution of the French artillery officer Alfred Dreyfus, who had been found guilty of treason. Zola died in Paris on September 29, 1902. Most of Zola's works are available in English translation, and many of his novels have been adapted into plays as well as into motion pictures.

In questa città trascorse l'infanzia e la prima giovinezza, divenendo amico di Cézanne durante gli anni del liceo. La morte del padre (1847) minò la già precaria economia familiare e costrinse Émile a fare ritorno a Parigi. Qui esercitò vari mestieri rinunciando a proseguire gli studi. Dopo un periodo di ristrettezze economiche e di frustrazioni psicologiche, si impiegò presso la casa editrice Hachette come fattorino; ben presto fu nominato capo del servizio di pubblicità entrando così in rapporto con i meccanismi dell'industria culturale e con i maggiori scrittori del tempo. Zola aveva intanto maturato la decisione di intraprendere la carriera giornalistica e letteraria, attraverso lo studio attento degli scrittori realisti (Balzac, Flaubert) e delle teorie positivistiche elaborate in quegli anni da Darwin, Taine e Claude Bernard. Le prime opere narrative furono Contes à Ninon (1864) e La confession de Claude Ben presto, però, lo studio dei nuovi testi scientifici, soprattutto "L'introduzione allo studio della medicina sperimentale" di Claude Bernard, la conoscenza delle teorie positiviste e la lettura approfondita dei grandi scrittori realisti portarono Zola a elaborare una concezione del romanzo come opera "sperimentale", guidata cioè dagli stessi criteri di obiettività che caratterizzavano la ricerca scientifica dei suoi contemporanei.
