ZOLA, EMILE EDOUARD CHARLES ANTOINE On the morning of the 2gth of September 1902 Zola was found dead in the bedroom of his Paris house, having been accidentally asphyxiated by the fumes from a defective flue. He received a public funeral, at which Captain Dreyfus was present. Anatole France delivered an impassioned oration at the grave. At the time of his death Zola had just completed a novel, Vente, dealing with the incidents of the Dreyfus trial. A sequel, Justice, had been planned, but not executed. After a life of constant struggle and an obloquy which never relaxed, the sensational close of Zola's career was the signal for an extraordinary burst of eulogy. The verdict of posterity will probably be kinder than the first, and less unmeasured than the second. Zola's literary position would have more than qualified him for the French Academy.1 He was several times a candidate in vain. (F. T. M.) Emile Zola; "Nana", "La Terre", "J'accuse"
Description of the Art Work
"Nana", 1880: Novel part of the series of the Rougont-Maquart. Story of a courtesan. "La Terre", 1887: One of his most grim and outspoken novel on the human condition. "J'accuse", 1898: Zola published concerning the Dreyfus affair-that of a Jewish French army officer whose trial for treason began a 12 year controversy that deeply marked the political and social history of the period - a fierce denunciation of the French general staff in the newspaper L'Aurore. It took the form of an open letter defending the innocence of Dreyfus.
Description of incident
1888 England: Vizetelly, the publisher, was imprisoned for publishing "La Terre"; even in their expurgated editions, ZolaÍs novels outraged the Victorian era. 1898 France: In 1894 Capt. Alfred Dreyfus was degraded and sentenced to Devil's Island for life for allegedly selling military secrets. Firm exonerating evidence was found in 1896, but Army circles suppressed it, denying a new trial, and causing intense protests. Zola denounced the military authorities in an open letter, "J'accuse."

April 2 ~  Living Out Loud Zola
"If you a s k e d me what I came into this world to do , I will t e l l you: I c a m e to live out l o u d ~ Emilé Zola French novelist Emilé Zola (1840-1902) was born on this date in Paris and founded the Naturalism movement in literature which was inspired by the importance of science and Darwin 's theory of evolution. A friend to painter Paul Cézanne , Zola was influenced by the romantics and once observed, "Let us eat, drink and satisfy our coarse appetites, but let us keep our souls sacred and apart." With his sacred soul, Zola became a beacon for social reform. His highly-acclaimed Germinal (1885) explored the dismal labor conditions of the coal mines. "The artist is nothing without the gift," Zola claimed. "But the gift is nothing without the work." In 1895, Zola's infamous involvement in the Dreyfus Affair was marked by his quest to free an innocent French Jewish army officer falsely accused of treason. The case provoked public protest and inspired Zola to send an impassioned letter to France's President Felix Faure. Each denouncing paragraph of the famous document began, "J'Accuse!" "I have one passion only," he wrote, "for lightin the name of humanity which has born so much and which has a right to

ZOLA, Emile
Friendship with Cezanne and a literary career in Paris in the 1860's led to Zola's interest in the new realist school in art. In 1864 he met Gabrielle Alexandrine Meley who posed for Monet and Cezanne and became his companion and, in 187o, his wife. A series of articles on the Salon of 1866 for L'Evenement marked the start of Zola's courageous defense of Manet in the 1860's. A study in the Revue du XIXe siecle was reprinted for Manet's 1867 exhibition, and Zola protested against the censorship of his lithograph and painting of The execution of Maximilian in 1869. He wanted Manet to illustrate his Tales for Ninon and dedicated the novel Madeleine Ferat to him in 1868, the year in which Manet painted his portrait and possibly one of Gabrielle. Rejected as a volunteer in 1870, Zola took his wife and mother away from Paris during the war, reporting on the provisional Republican government in Bordeaux. In the 1870's he continued his art criticism, championing Manet as leader of the new realist and Impressionist school but with reservations (in 1879 through an article which had appeared in a Russian review, and in 1880 with his articles in Le Voltaire). Although Zola was ultimately unable to accept him as the hoped for 'man of genius', Manet remained grateful for his old friend's support and paid tribute to his integrity and courage in 1881.
