Van 1843 tot 1858 woonde Zola in Aix-en-Province, in het zuiden van Frankrijk, waar hij bevriend raakte met de schilder Paul Cézanne, die een schoolvriendje van hem was. In 1858 keerde hij terug in Parijs en na een korte studiepoging ging hij werken op een expeditiekantoor. Na de verschijning van zijn eerste boek "Contes à Ninon" (Sprookjes voor Ninon) in 1864 gaf hij zijn baan op en startte een schrijverscarrière. Zijn werk verscheen met grote regelmaat in kranten en tijdschriften. Een paar jaar later, in 1868, begon hij aan een serie romans waarin het wel en wee van één familie tijdens het Tweede Keizerrijk werd gevolgd. Zola haalde in 1898 de internationale pers met zijn openbare brief "J'Accuse", waarin hij het opnam voor de van verraad beschuldigde kapitein Alfred Dreyfus. In zijn brief beschuldigde hij de Franse regering van antisemitisme en het achterhouden van de waarheid. Zola vluchtte naar Engeland en voorkwam hierdoor zijn eigen arrestatie. Certaines de ses oeuvres, comme L’Assommoir, lui ont permis de détrôner au firmament des romanciers le géant qu'était Victor Hugo. Magistral romancier prenant fait et cause pour les idéaux du socialisme, Zola fait également preuve d'un grand courage en militant pour la vérité dans l'affaire Dreyfus. Une jeunesse difficile : Né à Paris d'un père italien, Emile Zola grandit à Aix-en-Provence ; il a pour camarade celui qui sera le peintre Cézanne. Lorsqu'il a sept ans, son père meurt. La situation financière de la famille se dégradant, les Zola s'installent à Paris où Emile poursuit ses études ; il échoue au baccalauréat et est contraint d'accepter des travaux dans les docks puis dans une grande librairie parisienne. Les débuts dans l'écriture Sa fonction de chef de publicité chez Hachette lui permet d'une part de compléter. Sa culture générale, d'autre part de rencontrer les grands esprits de son temps : Lamartine, Littré, Sainte-Beuve entre autres. Zola se sent à cette époque proche du romantisme et se lance dans le journalisme. Les idées de Taine et de Claude Bernard le rapprochent du réalisme. Le succès du naturalisme : L'homme de combat : En 1894 débute l’affaire Dreyfus qui secoue la France entière. Rapidement, Zola est convaincu de l'innocence de ce capitaine, condamné uniquement parce qu'il est juif. Il prend, violemment parti pour ce dernier, notamment dans son article, j’accuse, paru le 13 janvier 1898 dans le journal L'Aurore. Condamné à un an de prison, Zola s'exile en Angleterre. À son retour, en 1899, il entame un autre cycle d'ouvrages où il fait part de son idéal humanitaire. En 1902, il meurt asphyxié au cours d'un accident suspect, avant d'avoir pu terminer sa dernière oeuvre. La même année, il s'était vu refuser le premier prix Nobel de littérature pour avoir écrit Nana, roman jugé choquant par la morale publique.

He seems to have worn dresses until he was about 4 years old, after whuch he mostly wore sailor suits and gingham smocks. Emile Zola is one of the most aclaimed writers in French loterature. He was the leading French author in the late 19th century. He was the leading light of French naturalism and a cutting novelist and polemical writer. Had he died in 1895 he would today be remembered as an important French author. Today he is primarily remembered as a leading advocate of human rights for a letter written at considerable personal risk and published in 1898 accusing the French military of unjustly convicting a them obscure French army officer of treason. Zola had two children. The girl, Dennis, was born in 1889 and her younger brother, Jacques, was born 2 years later in 1891. Zola was an avid amateur photographer and there are many wonderful photographs of the children. These are very valuable because many were taken in the 1890s before amateur photography and family snapshots were common. Family Emile's father was an Italian engineer, who gained French citizenship in 1862.
