Island 2: Travel, Folktales, and Nursery Stories The romance of other lands Although some early nineteenth-century parents and educators distrusted fairy tales, romantic geography and missionary narrative could claim to be "true" while still providing acceptable substitutes for imaginative stimulation. Shown here are Panorama of the East from Merrill's Pictorial Gallery (1852) and a tract The Indian Chief and the Little White Boy (undated, but probably 1840s). Robinson Crusoe The original on which much geographical adventure derived was Defoe's adult novel The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner (originally 1719). Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), political writer and novelist, had based his story on the true experience of a shipwrecked Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk; indeed, Defoe presented his novel as if it were non-fiction. Frequently reprinted for young readers (often in abridged form), Robinson Crusoe is displayed here in a mid-nineteenth-century American edition (Newburyport, 1856). Rewriting Robinson Crusoe The popularity of Defoe's novel as a book for children led to repeated attempts to correct what it would teach its readers.

Written in obvious homage to Defoe s novel, Swiss Pastor Johann David Wyss s (17431818) Swiss Family Robinson takes the notion of creating civilization on
http://www.columbia.edu/~lnp3/mydocs/culture/cast_away.htm
Cast Away Robert Zemeckis' extraordinary new film "Cast Away", starring Tom Hanks as the stranded survivor of a 4 year ordeal on a remote island, is merely the latest in a long line of artistic works that consider the question of civilization (i.e. capitalist society) using this plot device. Before examining the film, it might be useful to review some of the literature. The first, and probably the greatest, work in this genre is Shakespeare's "The Tempest". The evidence is overwhelming that Shakespeare not only set "The Tempest" on a Caribbean island, but included a Native American major character. The play's ambivalent attitude toward this indigenous slave Caliban serves not only as a useful window into 17th century racial attitudes, it also helps us understand our own period as well. The name Caliban, it should be added, is regarded as a form of "Carib," the name of the original inhabitants on the islands invaded by Columbus. In 1609 a fleet of nine ships set out from England to shore up John Smith's Virginia colony, the first English settlement in the new world. As most people already know from their high-school propaganda, Smith was condemned to death by Powhatan, but was saved at the last minute when his 13 year old daughter Pocahontas interceded on Smith's behalf. The British returned the favor a couple of years later by burning down Indian villages and attempting to enslave them. One of the nine ships was separated during a violent storm and ended up on Bermuda. Pamphlets were published that gave a highly imaginative account of the shipwrecked crew's experiences. Evidently Shakespeare got the idea for his play from this background material since "The Tempest" is a tale about shipwrecked Europeans colonizing an American island and enslaving the native population.

NOTES OF A USED AND OUT-OF-PRINT BOOK DEALER
#11 August 16, 20001 Continental Books publishes this free biweekly email newsletter for customers and interested others. Here we investigate, in articles and stories, books as objects, as media, as commodities. Books in circulation like gigantic herds of buffalo, books almost as rare as the dodo. Also books and book people, mint to well-used; stained and torn; comic, romantic, erratic, exotic, informative, astonishing. Here we wander the stacks, corridors going on and on, rubber heels squeaking against the glass brick floors. Titles and authors beckoning from bindings, handsome or shabby: "Read me," each whispers or shouts according to mood, "Read me now." Contents
