Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource
Early Artists
Mostly limited to artists born before 1900. A list of approximately 175 artists whose artwork depicts Mount Shasta, but does not include photographers. This is an ongoing list updated as of December 1991. Compiled from various sources including auction records, exhibition catalogs, art books, art gallery exhibitions, private collections, etc. Note that Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885), traveling southward as naturalist with the 1841 Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition, lost his sketching materials while crossing the Umpqua Mountains in southern Oregon. No depiction of Mount Shasta by Peale is known to exist. Thus only his fellow expedition members, the world-reknowned geologist James Dwight Dana and the official expedition artist Alfred Thomas Agate, both of whom did sketch Mount Shasta, share the honor of creating the earliest bona-fide pictures of Mount Shasta. Titian Peale, because of his stature as an American artist and his presence at Mount Shasta in 1841, is included in the following list. Adam, William (1846-1931);

    Ludlow
    Shropshire town, 8 miles SE of Craven Arms. Ludlow's architectural and scenic delights have been extolled in just about every guide book written about the county. Suffice to say here that it is an ancient and beautiful town, physically dominated by the ruined castle and magnificent parish church. Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was educated, or supposedly educated, by Richard Wickstead at Ludlow Castle. The writer Kenneth Bird (1916-1993) lived in Ludlow for many years where he edited the local newspaper and wrote many of his children's books. Samuel Butler (1612-1680), author of the great satire Hudibras (1663-1678) was Steward at the castle in the year 1661. Susan Davis (1952-) worked in Ludlow's tourism and education centres before becoming a full-time writer. A.E. Houseman (1859-1936) referred nostalgically to Ludlow in many of his Shropshire poems. His ashes were burried near the north door of St. Laurence's Church. John Milton (1608-1674) wrote the masque Comus (1634) in honour of the Earl of Bridgewater and it was performed for the first time in the Council Chamber of Ludlow Castle.
