Wood, Robert Williams (1868-1955)

This entry contributed by Michel Barran American physicist who received his B.A. from Harvard in 1891. He then studied at Johns Hopkins (1892), Chicago (1892-1894), and Berlin (1894-1896), although never earning a doctorate. He subsequently taught at the University of Wisconsin (1897) and became professor of experimental physics in 1901 at Johns Hopkins, where he was subsequently named professor emeritus in 1938 and research professor for 1938-1955. Wood was internationally known for his work in optics and spectroscopy, in which fields he undertook fundamental research in resonance radiation and in the use of absorption screens in astronomical photography. He also devised a vastly improved diffraction grating In 1897, Wood became the first to observe field emission i.e., charged particles emitted from a conductor in an electric field This phenomenon is now used in the field emission microscope for studying atomic structure. Wood's work on sodium vapor was especially noteworthy (Dunoyer). Wood also developed a color-photography process, as well as both infrared and ultraviolet photography. Wood made many inventions in various fields, including the method of thawing street mains by passing an electric current through them, the frosted glass light bulb, the Vienna method of detecting forged documents. He was apparently also the first person ever to show animated films. After 1920, Wood made important contributions to the fields of ultrasound and biophysics by studying the biological and physiological effects of high-frequency sound waves. The "Wood light" for generating ultraviolet radiation (more commonly called a "

Robert Williams Wood
American experimenter in physical optics and unsung pioneer of film animation Born in Massachusetts, Wood studied at Harvard and Berlin before teaching at the University of Wisconsin from 1897 to 1901, and spent the remainder of a distinguished career as professor of experimental physics at John Hopkins University, also working on the Manhattan Project in 1940. It was while at Wisconsin that Wood's name became temporarily linked to the history of cinema. At the time he was studying the propagation of sound waves and their reflections from surfaces, and he wanted some way to demonstrate the results. 'It occurred to me', he told the Royal Society in February 1900, 'that a very vivid idea of how these curious wave-fronts are derived from one another could be obtained if a complete series could be prepared on the film of a cinematograph, and projected in motion on a screen'. Wood had previously taken still photographs of wave fronts using spark illumination, but, finding it impossible to control the precise timing of the sparks, he was forced to abandon direct cinematography of the waves. Instead, a series of about one hundred drawings were made, based on the stills, showing the various stages of a wave's progress, and these were then photographed separately on a film, 'by means of the animatograph, which Mr. Paul has most kindly placed at our disposal'. (It is unclear to what extent Robert Paul Stephen Bottomore
