P.G. Wodehouse
Profile
Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was a prolific and extremely popular writer of humorous novels. Wodehouse was the son of a Hong Kong civil servant, who retired through ill health and returned to England, firstly to Dulwich and then to Hay's House, Stableford in Shropshire. Young P. G. Wodehouse, although educated away from home at boarding school returned to Stableford for his holidays and grew to know the district well between the ages of fourteen and twenty one (when the family moved again to Cheltenham). He retained a great affection for the county, particularly the area around Stableford, which is a few miles from Bridgnorth, and it was to become one of the major sources for composite settings in the novels, together with Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Wiltshire. Wodehouse's last, unfinished novel was Sunset at Blandings which Richard Usborne edited in 1978 after the author's death. Usborne followed up all references to Shropshire in the various Wodehouse novels, but especially this last one, and consulted contemporary railway timetables to see if fictional journeys could actually have been made. All this was in an effort to identify and locate the original of Blandings Castle. Usborne's conclusion was that it must be Buildwas , a mile or so up the Severn from Ironbridge.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, lyrics, and essays, all with the same light touch of gentle satire. He is best known as the creator of the irredeemably dim and unflaggingly affable Bertie Wooster and his invincible valet Jeeves, but Wodehouse also produced multi-volume story cycles on Blandings Castle, Mr. Mulliner's extended family, Mike and Psmith, the Oldest Member, Uncle Fred, and the Drones Club. (All this is in addition to his many stand-alone novels, short stories, and plays.) Throughout his stories, Wodehouse presents a view of the world which differs from his fans would say, improves upon the focus most people have. For a variety of reasons, pigs, newts, and statues of the Infant Samuel at Prayer play significant roles in the Wodehousian view, while such things as death, taxes, and work are crowded towards the O. P. wings. The intent of this site is to provide a set of links to those sites on the World Wide Web that, in one way or another, stand with Wodehouse as he surveys the world.

Memories are like mulligatawny soup in a cheap restaurant. It is best not to stir them. If I had had to choose between him and a cockroach as a companion for a walking-tour, the cockroach would have had it by a short head. While not exactly disgruntled, he was far from feeling gruntled. I pressed down the mental accelerator. The old lemon throbbed fiercely. I got an idea. I just sit at a typewriter and curse a bit. I know I was writing stories when I was five. I don't know what I did before that. Just loafed I suppose. Success comes to a writer, as a rule, so gradually that it is always something of a shock to him to look back and realize the heights to which he has climbed.

PG Wodehouse The Man Upstairs Introduction
"I turned to Aunt Agatha, whose demeanour was now rather like that of one who, picking daisies on the railway, has just caught the down express in the small of the back" ( The Inimitable Jeeves Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, always known as either P.G. Wodehouse or simply Plum (in his Punch writing and letters), was born on October 15th 1881 in Guildford, Surrey. He is best known for his Jeeves and Wooster stories, although he wrote novels and stories about a great many other hilarious characters. His father was a civil servant who left to become a judge in Hong Kong while Plum was still a boy. As such, the young Wodehouse spent much of his childhood in the care of aunts (see his constant preoccupation with relatives, especially aunts, in his fiction). He went to school at Dulwich college and seems to have enjoyed his time there. His famous Psmith character represents his boarding school years. Wodehouse's first career was as a banker for he Hong Kong and Shanghai bank but he turned his back on this swiftly and took up freelance writing just two years later. He began by writing for boys' magazines and moved on to the Strand Magazine - where a great many of his books were published serially first - and Punch . His first novel was published in 1902 and his output was extremely prolific, including the dialogue and stories to many successful musical comedies. He married in 1914 but, despite already having become one of the leading humorists of his age, he had not reached his peak. That came with the characters of Bertie Wooster and his manservant Jeeves in the volume

[Sir Pelham Grenville]
It's almost impossible to write funny about humor, and anyone who writes seriously about it is
doomed to come off as a fuddy duddy. E.B. White, a funny writer himself, once said that analyzing
humor is like dissecting a frog, in that the thing tends to die in the process and the results will be
interesting only to the purely scientific mind.
-Andrew Ferguson Divine Comedy : P.G. Wodehouse's perfect pitch Two things the critics generally appear to agree on are that : (1) P. G. Wodehouse is one of the funniest writers in the English language; and, (2) it's almost impossible to explain why. Among the various authorities cited for the difficulty in analyzing humor are Evelyn Waugh and Sigmund Freud , themselves authors of hilarious fictions. Suffice it to say, and I mean this in the very best sense, the enjoyments of the Jeeves and Wooster stories are much the same as those of the great TV sitcoms. Wodehouse created these two great comic characters, surrounded them in each story with oddballs, plunked them all down in trying situations, and then had the inimitable Jeeves extract Bertie and his upper-class nitwit friends from their difficulties through various stratagems and diversions. Though Andrew Ferguson and others deny that there is any deeper meaning or political content to the stories, it is at least notable that the finest young gentlemen in all of England are hopelessly overmatched by life unless Jeeves steps in to save them. The resulting stories have a certain sameness to themof course, just try watching ten episodes of
