Milton C. Winternitz, President James R. Angell, and Robert Hutchinson, Dean of the Law School, were major supporters. "Winternitz saw medicine as a social science with a responsibility to the community. C.E.A. Winslow was a staunch ally, but others, such as Abraham Flexner, thought the institute a pipe dream and the applied research inappropriate for a university." (Medicine at Yale, 1901-1951: 1921-1931. Paupack, Pike County
SUBMITTED BY AUDREY GRAYBILL rgraybil@ptd.net PAUPACK CEMETERY is located SW of Rte. 507 in Paupack, Palmyra Township, Pike County, PA. near the intersection of Gumbletown Road. A narrow dirt road leads back into the woods, following a stonewall, to the area known as Old Ground which was incorporated into the larger Paupack Cemetery in 1877. There are graves dating prior to 1800, although the oldest tombstones are diificult to read. One of the oldest inhabitants, Zadoch Killam, requested that a pine tree, rather than a stone marker, be placed over his gravesite. This two-hundred year white pine dominates the scene and it is showing its age.  Seedlings from Zadoch Killam's tree have spread throughout the area just as his descendants made their homes in the nearby hillsides.  In her book, Traditions of Wallenpaupack , Helen M. Cooke tells the reader that " within the sunny grave-yard all was rest, and peace and quiet. Then, when Death came to the Paupack, their dear ones, asleep to waken in that Land beyond the sunrise, here they tenderly could lay them. while the low songs of the brooklet, with the bird-songs from the forest, evermore would sing their requiem, ever tell of deeds accomplished." AFFORD, child of Charles
