Writer and Wit
1854 to 1900
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His father, Sir William Wilde, was an eminent Dublin surgeon and his mother, Jane Francesca Elgee, agitated for Irish Independence and wrote revolutionary poems under the pseudonym "Speranza". In 1864 Wilde went to the Portora Royal School where he excelled in the classics, taking top prizes. He was awarded the Royal School Scholarship to Trinity College in Dublin where he earned a Foundation Scholarship. In 1874, he won the college's Berkeley Gold Medal for Greek and was awarded a Demyship scholarship to Magdalen College in Oxford. There Wilde was awarded the Newdigate prize for his poem, Ravenna , and a First Class in both his "Mods" and "Greats. After graduation, he moved to London. In 1881, he published his first collection of poetry, Poems , which received mixed reviews by critics. In 1881 and 1882 Wilde travelled across the United States giving over 140 lectures in 260 days. He spent the next couple of years in Britain and France, championing 'Art Nouveau'-essentially the Aesthetic, art for art's sake movement. In 1884, he married Constance Lloyd. They had two sons, Cyril in 1885 and Vyvyan in 1886. He worked on The Woman's World magazine in 1887-1889. In the following six years he published two collections of childrens stories

The Picture of Dorian Grey
By Oscar Wilde QUOTATION: Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
QUOTATION: The husbands of very beautiful women belong to the criminal classes.
QUOTATION: Nothing makes one so vain as being told that one is a sinner.
QUOTATION: Laughter is not at all a bad beginning for a friendship, and it is far the best ending for one.
QUOTATION: Fashion, by which what is really fantastic becomes for a moment the universal.
QUOTATION: I hate vulgar realism in literature. The man who could call a spade a spade should be compelled to use one. It is the only thing he is fit for.
QUOTATION: It is an odd thing, but every one who disappears is said to be seen at San Francisco. It must be a delightful city, and possess all the attractions of the next world.

Wilde, Oscar (1854-1900)
page: The importance of Oscar Wilde resides both in his art and in his personality. He is one of the most accomplished writers of his generation, but quite apart from his actual literary achievement, he is significant as a symbolic figure who exemplified a way of being homosexual at a pivotal moment in the emergence of gay consciousness, the crucial final decade of the nineteenth century. Actually, however, Wilde's literary significance is inseparable from his function as a symbolic figure. Although he frequently asserted the impersonality of art, his own art is irreparably bound to his personality. Sponsor Message.
In fact, his greatest artistic creation is the complex and contradictory persona reflected in his work and in his life. Ultimately, that persona became transfigured from a witty aesthete into a figure as poignant as it was unpredictable, Saint Oscar, the homosexual martyr. Born to accomplished but eccentric parents in Ireland in 1854, Wilde was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was almost equally influenced by the practically incompatible artistic doctrines of the moralistic John Ruskin and the epicurean Walter Pater.

Dublin. Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) Irish history. OSCAR FINGAL O FLAHERTIE WILLS WILDE (1854 - 1900)
Oscar Wilde was born 16th October 1854 in Westland Row, Dublin. He studied at Trinity College Dublin graduating with first class honours in classics and humanities. His literary talent had already began to emerge at Oxford where he won the Newdigate Poetry Prize with a poem entitled "Ravenna".
He published his first volume of poems in 1881. The following year he went on the lecture circuit in the United States and Canada lecturing on "Aesthetic philosophy". Asked at customs whether he had anything to declare, he replied "only my genius". The effervescent wit which was to characterise his later plays was always to the fore.
The same year he married Constance Lloyd and they had two sons. After a couple of near misses, his first stage triumph was "Lady Windermere's Fan" which was an instant success. This was to be followed by "A Woman of No Importance", "An Ideal Husband" and "The Importance of Being Earnest".

By: Roberto Quintos , Contributing Writer
If Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde were alive today he would be a rock star living in Hollywood and would always be on the cover of gossip magazines. Oscar Wilde invented himself for the public. He was a genius who would never pass up the opportunity to tell someone of his genius but at the same time never took himself seriously. Oscar knew the duality of life, the good side and the underlying dark side and much of his life and work reflected this.
He was born on 16 October 1854 in Dublin and found his literary calling at an early age through letter correspondences with his mother, the Lady Jane Speranza Francesca Wilde. His mother too wrote patriotic Irish verse under the pseudonym, Speranza.
Wilde was born of professional and literary parents. His father, Sir William Wilde, was Ireland's leading ear and eye surgeon, who also published books on archaeology, folklore, and the satirist Jonathan Swift; his mother was a revolutionary poet and an authority on Celtic myth and folklore.
After attending Portora Royal School, Enniskillen (1864-71), Wilde went, on successive scholarships, to Trinity College, Dublin (1871-74), and Magdalen College, Oxford (1874-78), which awarded him a degree with honours. During these four years, he distinguished himself not only as a classical scholar, a poseur, and a wit but also as a poet by winning the coveted Newdigate Prize in 1878 with a long poem, Ravenna. He was deeply impressed by the teachings of the English writers John Ruskin and Walter Pater on the central importance of art in life and particularly by the latter's stress on the aesthetic intensity by which life should be lived. Like many in his generation, Wilde was determined to follow Pater's urging "to burn always with [a] hard, gemlike flame." But Wilde also delighted in affecting an aesthetic pose; this, combined with rooms at Oxford decorated with objets d'art, resulted in his famous remark: "Oh, would that I could live up to my blue china!"

Oscar Wilde T HE apple trees are hung with gold, And birds are loud in Arcady, The sheep lie bleating in the fold, The wild goat runs across the wold, But yesterday his love he told, I know he will come back to me. O rising moon! O Lady moon! Be you my lover’s sentinel, You cannot choose but know him well, For he is shod with purple shoon, You cannot choose but know my love, For he a shepherd’s crook doth bear, And he is soft as any dove, And brown and curly is his hair. The turtle now has ceased to call Upon her crimson-footed groom, The grey wolf prowls about the stall, The lily’s singing seneschal Sleeps in the lily-bell, and all The violet hills are lost in gloom. O risen moon! O holy moon! Stand on the top of Helice, And if my own true love you see Ah! if you see the purple shoon, The hazel crook, the lad’s brown hair, The goat-skin wrapped about his arm, Tell him that I am waiting where The rushlight glimmers in the Farm. The falling dew is cold and chill, And no bird sings in Arcady, The little fauns have left the hill, Even the tired daffodil Has closed its gilded doors, and still
