Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.

Among Wilde's other best-known works are his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray , which deals very similar theme as Robert Luis Stevenson 's Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde . Wilde's fairy tales are very popular - the motifs have been compared to those of Hans Christian Andersen "When they entered they found, hanging upon the wall, a splendid portrait of their master as they had last seen him, in all the wonder of his exquisite youth and beauty. Lying on the floor was a dead man, in evening dress, with a knife in his heart. He was withered, wrinkled, and loathsome of visage. It was not till they had examined the rings that they recognized who it was." (from The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin to unconventional parents. His mother, Lady Jane Francesca Wilde (1820-96), was a poet and journalist. Her pen name was Sperenza. According to a story she warded off creditors by reciting Aeschylus. Wilde's father was Sir William Wilde, an Irish antiquarian, gifted writer, and specialist in diseases of the eye and ear, who founded a hospital in Dublin a year before Oscar was born. His work gained for him the honorary appointment of Surgeon Oculist in Ordinary to the Queen. Lady Wilde, who was active in the women's rights movement, was reputed to ignore her husbands amorous adventures.

    Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)
'The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it...' Just one of Oscar Wilde's endlessly entertaining and often hard-hitting quotations. He is a man who inspired - and continues to inspire - both admiration and argument. The roller-coaster story of his life is testimony to his eccentric genius. He was born Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde in Dublin, 1854, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. His genius for writing was instantly recognised and in 1878 he was awarded the Newdigate Prize for his poem 'Ravenna', an initial confirmation of his prodigious talent. A first volume of poetry Patience was published in 1881, three years after he had received his degree. This was followed by The Duchess of Padua, a play published in 1883. His literary career was diverse: as well as composing verse, he lectured in America; contributed to publications like the Pall Mall Gazette ; wrote fairy stories (collected in The Happy Prince and Other Tales ); wrote the novel

    Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)
Oscar Wilde was born in 1854 to William Wilde and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde, prominent intellectuals in Dublin, Ireland. Though not of the aristocracy, the Wildes were nonetheless well off and sent Oscar to the finest schools as he grew up. Oscar seems especially influenced by his mother, a brilliantly witty raconteur, and he was frequently invited while still a child to participate in their intellectual circle of friends. Wilde entered Trinity College Dublin in 1871 and enjoyed an accomplished career, garnering awards and studying the classics as well as theories of aestheticism. In 1874, he transferred to Oxford in England and studied under the divergent tutorials of John Ruskin (a Renaissance man of many scholarly talents) and Walter Pater (an influential proponent of the new school of aestheticism). Wilde negotiated their conflicting philosophies while he experimented with flashy clothing and discovered his homosexual tendencies. Upon graduating from Oxford, Wilde had a brief flirtation with Catholicism, even meeting with the Pope, but his independent ideas prevented his exclusive attachment to religion. In 1881, he published his first volume of verse (Poems), and was a well-known enough entity to be satirized by a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera. He moved to the avant-garde neighborhood of Chelsea in London, but his father's death and the family's snowballing debts forced him to embark on a lecture tour of the United States in 1882. Upon arriving at customs, Wilde boldly made his now-famous statement: "I have nothing to declare except my genius." On tour, he dressed up as a dandy and advocated the philosophy of the Aesthetic, the idea that art should exist solely for art's sake‹or, as he wrote elsewhere, it should be "useless." While on tour, Wilde also produced his first, unsuccessful play in New York, Vera.

This is a wonderful book if you are only interested in reading the actual transcript from Oscar's trial. Indeed, the book is excellent in that respect. However, I would say it is a book to avoid if you are a fan of Lord Alfred Douglas. It seems to me that this book, like so many before it, is trying to make Alfred Douglas the scapegoat. There was a reason Bosie wanted Oscar to take his father to trial, they WOULD have won. It was a carefully laid out plan and Oscar, not Bosie, is the one who ...

Lovingly compiled by Karl Beckson from Oscar Wilde's plays, novels, essays, short fiction, and letters, I Can Resist Everything Except Temptation contains more than 1,000 examples of Wilde's famously pithy wit. All the familiar barbs are here"Work is the curse of the drinking classes of this country"as well as arch indictments of his age's prevailing style and mores. But the book contains more poignant examples of Wilde's bon mots as wellfor instance, these lines on his own impri...

At this point Worthing announced that he intended to propose marriage to Gweiidolen, but was taken aback by Algernon's response: "I doii't give my consent."
