NOCIONES PRIMIGENIAS.

scar Wilde, the son of an eminent Dublin surgeon Walter Pater he founded the Aesthetic Movement, which advocated "art for art's sake." His aesthetic idiosyncrasies such as his wearing his hair long, dressing colourfully, and carrying flowers while lecturing Gilbert and Sullivan parodied in the operetta Patience After his marriage to Constance Lloyd in 1884, he published several children's books, and in 1891 the tale of a hedonistic Adonis with the tormented soul of a satyr, The Picture of Dorian Gray . In a brilliant series of domestic comedies Lady Windermere's Fan A Woman of No Importance (1893), and An Ideal Husband (1894) Wilde took the London stage by storm with his witty, epigrammatic style, insolent ease of utterance, and suave urbanity. Wilde described Lady Windermere's Fan as "one of those modern drawing-room plays with pink lampshades." Its combination of polished social drama and corruscatingly witty dialogue was repeated in 1895 in the two hits that he had on the London stage simultaneously, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest . Later that same year Wilde's tragic downfall was precipitated by the accusation of homosexuality by the Marquis of Queensbury, father of Wilde's intimate, Lord Alfred Douglas. The irate peer left a card at Wilde's club addressed: "To Oscar Wilde posing as a Somdomite" (sic). Wilde, taking it that the writer meant "Sodomite," sued for libel. However, after a sensational trial, Wilde was sentenced to two years' hard labour for homosexual practices. Sent to Wandsworth Prison in November, 1895, Wilde was subsequently transferred to Reading Gaol. Bankrupt and ruined in health, Wilde left prison in 1897 and settled, bitter and broken, in Paris under the pseudonym "Sebastian Melmoth" (the name of his favourite martyr from

    Wilde, Oscar (1854-1900)
Death and vulgarity are the only two facts in the 19th century that one cannot explain away. I am not young enough to know everything. In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants and the other is getting it. The last is much the worst, the last is the real tragedy. Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about. One should always be in love. That is the reason one should never marry. One touch of nature may take the whole world kin, but two touches of nature will destroy any work of art. Society often forgives the criminal, it never forgives the dreamer. Sound English common sense - the inherited stupidity of the race. The more we study art, the less we care for nature. What art really reveals to us is nature's lack of design, her curious crudities, her extraordinary monotony, her absolutely unfinished condition. The newspapers chronicle with degrading avidity the subs of the second-rate, and with the conscientiousness of the illiterate give us accurate and prosaic details of the doings of people of absolutely no interest whatever.

    Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
The Irish writer Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin on 16 October 1854. His reputation rests on his masterpieces "Lady Windermere's Fan" and "The Importance of Being Earnest". Oscar Wilde was the object of civil and criminal suits involving homosexuality, ending in his imprisonment. Wilde was educated at Trinity College in Dublin. Later, as a student at the Magdalen University of Oxford, he excelled in classics and wrote poetry. Here he incorporated the Bohemian life-style into a unique way of life. Wilde was impressed by the teachings of the English writers John Ruskin and Walter Pater. In the early 1880s, Aestheticism was the rage and despair of literary London. Oscar Wilde established himself in social life and artistic circles by his wit and flamboyance. Wilde's first book was "Poems" (1881). His first play "Vera, or the Nihilists" (1882) was produced in New York. After a very successful lecture tour in the United States and Canada, Wilde returned to London and married a wealthy Irish woman in 1884. With Constance Lloyd, the daughter of an Irish barrister, he had two children, Cyril and Vyvyan.

THE CRITIC AS ARTIST, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
WITH SOME REMARKS UPON THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING NOTHING
As for modern journalism, it is not my business to defend it. It justifies its own existence by the great Darwinian principle of the survival of the vulgarest. I have merely to do with literature. Ernest: But what is the difference between literature and journalism? Gilbert: Oh! journalism is unreadable, and literature is not read. That is all. But with regard to your statement that the Greeks had no art-critics, I assure you that is quite absurd. It would be more just to say that the Greeks were a nation of art-critics. Ernest: Really?
    THE CRITIC AS ARTIST. Sigue
Gilbert: But, surely, Criticism is itself an art. And just as artistic creation implies the working of the critical faculty, and, indeed, without it cannot be said to exist at all, so Criticism is really creative in the highest sense of the word. Criticism is, in fact, both creative and independent. Ernest Independent?
