Oscar Wilde Oscar O'Flahertie Fingal Wills Wilde, born in Dublin, Ireland on October 16, 1854, was the second son of Sir William and Lady Jane Wilde. Sir William was a renowned surgeon who found himself embroiled in a sensational scandal in 1864 when Mary Travers, a former patient, informed a local newspaper that she had been chloroformed and raped. Lady Jane was a poet who stood six feet tall and claimed to be "above respectability." She loved to make a sensation and passed this passion on to her youngest son. Vera or The Nihilists, was not well received. Nor was his first volume of poetry. Wilde decided briefly to adopt a life of Victorian respectability. In 1884, he married Constance Lloyd and fathered two sons, Cyril (1885) and Vyvyan (1886). He even became editor of Women's World , a very reputable publication. But respectability was a terrible burden for Wilde, and by 1886 he was sneaking off to Oxford to visit young men. Shortly thereafter, he separated from his wifeclaiming that he'd been away from home for so long that he'd forgotten the house numberand cut off ties with most of his family and intellectual peers. He submerged himself in a disorienting sea of liquor and young men and set out with his writing to "disturb the monotony of type, slavery of custom, tyranny of habit and reduction of man to the level of machine." Ironically, it was during this devil-may-care period (1888-1895) that most of Wilde's important works were written.

Among Wilde's other best-known works are his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) and his fairy tales especially "The Happy Prince."
Wilde was born on October 16, 1854 in Dublin to unconventional parents - his mother Lady Jane Francesca Wilde (1820-96), was a poet and journalist. His father was Sir William Wilde, an Irish antiquarian, gifted writer, and specialist in diseases of the eye and ear. Wilde studied at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh (1864-71), Trinity College, Dublin (1871-74) and Magdalen College, Oxford (1874-78).
In 1878 Wilde received his B.A. and in the same year he moved to London. His lifestyle and humorous wit soon made him the spokesman for Aestheticism, the late 19th century movement in England that advocated art for art's sake. He worked as art reviewer (1881), lectured in the United States and Canada (1882), and lived in Paris (1883). Between the years 1883 and 1884 he lectured in Britain. From the mid-1880s he was a regular contributor for

Oscar Wilde, 1854-1900
Biography
(from: WWW Cemetery @ http://www.io.org/cemetery/Overview.html) Oscar Wilde was born in 1854 and grew up in an intellectually bustling Irish household. His mother was a poet who wrote under the pen name Speranza and who had a considerable following; his father was a renowned physician with an interest in myths and folklore.
At Oxford he won a coveted poetry award and came under the influence of the late nineteenth century aesthetic movement. He found its notions of "art for art's sake" and dedicating one's life to art suitable to his temperment and talents. Oscar had a desire to make himself famous and set off to London to do just that.
From 1878 to 1881 Oscar Wilde became well known for being well known despite having any substantial acheivements to build on. He insinuated himself into the class of people he labelled as "the beautiful people", wore outrageous clothes, passed himself off as an art critic and aesthete, and built a reputation for saying shocking things and doing amusing ones. If one tells the truth, one is sure sooner or later to be found out. His natural wit and good humour endeared him to the art and theater world and through his lover Frank Miles he found easy entry into the cliques that frequented London's theater circuit and drawing rooms.
He became a much-desired all-purpose party guest and, with his velvet coat, knee breeches, silk stockings, pale green tie, cane, shoulder-length hair, loose silk shirts and the lily he occasionally carried through Picadilly Circus, much talked about and satirized. His popularity and flamboyance led to his being choosen as an advance publicity man for a new Gilbert and Sullivan operetta

Oscar Wilde
A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not worth glancing at.
To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.
All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his.
I have nothing to declare but my genius.
A man's face is his autobiography. A woman's face is her work of fiction.
Always forgeive your enemies; nothing annoys them more.
We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
There are only two tragiedies in life: One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.
Ah! don't say you agree with me. When people agree with me I always feel that I must be wrong
I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.
I can resist everything except temptation. There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about. Patirotism is a virtue of the vicious. I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best. A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.
