Page 2 Photo Essay by Herman Krieger I take photographs to amuse myself as well as the occasional spectator. Exhibiting photographs for mutual pleasure is similar to a comedian telling jokes to an appreciative audience. But comedy is more serious than photography. Viewers who see more in my photographs than I do probably have better vision. Those who see less than I do may be right, and I remain partially open to their criticism

PROFESSOR RABBIT In the United States, rabbits do not enjoy all the special status that our companion dogs and cats do. While we do not eat dogs or cats, rabbits can be found as "cuisine" on restaurant menus. A few years ago, the retail buying public was horrified to discover that coats imported from Asia were lined with dog and cat fur yet rabbit fur can be found in many consumer items. Rabbit fur is made into earmuffs, bomber jackets, hats, purses, lining for gloves, trim for coats, and furry toys for companion cats.
What rabbits do share with dogs, cats, and other animals is the status of test subject. New Zealand white rabbits are the most widely used subject for the Draize Eye Irritancy Test (see below) because they are docile, have large eyes, and are easily obtained. Angora rabbits, prized for their fur that is sheared and spun into yarn, are "kept in such a way so as not to stain on mat the fur." They are described in terms such as "pet as producer" and their fur is "harvested." They are given feed formulated to produce "good wool" as opposed to ensure health and longevity.
To advocate for humane treatment of rabbits we must become educated about their plight and then take action.

This endless circle is so symbolic of how I live each day I run and run but always end up in the same way. Christina ROSSETTI (1830-1894) from 'A Nursery Rhyme Book' Hurt no living thing: Ladybird, nor butterfly, Nor moth with dusty wing, Nor cricket chirping cheerily, Nor grasshopper so light of leap, Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat, Nor harmless worms that creep. from 'To What Purpose this Waste?' Windows of the Soul
Who wrote " in the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is King"?
H.G.Wells. In the story, a sighted man fell into the Valley of the Blind and fell in love with a blind girl.
When faced with the threat of losing his sight, he fled.
Recently, a newspaper in Thailand was prosecuted for treason because the editor used the same
phrase. He was thought to mock the King of Thailand who lost one of his eyes during a car accident
while studying medicine in Harvard.
2. In Balzac's short story "The Elixir of Long Life". What happened to the eye of the dead man when his son
applied a magic potion over it?
In the story, a dying man asks his son to spread a magic potion over his corpse to resurrect him. The
youth applies it first to one eye. It opens, and all at once it is "thinking, accusing condemning, threatening, judging, speaking, shouting and biting." The son shuts the eye and keeps the elixir for himself. 3. Who mused that "The soul, fortunately, has an interpreter often an unconscious but still a faithful interpreter in the eye" ?
