HISTORY : Kate Douglas Smith Wiggins was born in Philadelphia in 1856 and moved with her family to California in 1873. In 1878, she headed the first free Kindergarten on the West Coast and was a well known children's writer. Her best known book being Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. John Kendrick Bangs was an author of spoof fantasy and was editor of a number of magazines, including Puck (1904-1905). CONTENTS: Text of inscription: "They say I have a sense of humour. I know you have so pray and read some of yourself into my lines." SUBJECTS : Wiggin, Kate Douglas Smith, 1856-1923.
