    Wiggin, Kate Douglas (Smith) Wiggin, Kate Douglas (Smith), , American author and educator, b. Philadelphia. In San Francisco she organized the first free kindergartens on the Pacific coast (1878) and with her sister established a training school for kindergarten teachers. As part of her teaching career she wrote her first book, The Story of Patsy (1883). The most popular among her many later works for children were The Birds' Christmas Carol Timothy's Quest Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903), and Mother Carey's Chickens See her autobiography, My Garden of Memory (1923); biography by her sister, Nora A. Wiggin, Kate Douglas Smith
(1856-1923), educator and writer Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 28, 1856, Kate Douglas Smith attended a district school and for short periods the Gorham (Maine) Female Seminary; the Morison Academy in Baltimore, Maryland; and the Abbott Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. In 1873 she moved with her family to Santa Barbara, California. The death of her stepfather in 1877 left the family in perilous financial condition. At the suggestion of Caroline M. Severance, who also provided her room and board, Smith entered the Pacific Model Training School for Kindergartners headed by Emma Marwedel For a time after completing the course Smith directed a private kindergarten in Santa Barbara. In 1878 she headed the Silver Street Kindergarten in San Franciscothe first free kindergarten on the West Coast of the United States. In 1880, after further training under Susan Blow and Elizabeth Peabody , Smith helped establish the California Kindergarten Training School. She remained head of the Silver Street Kindergarten until her marriage in 1881 to Samuel B. Wiggin, a lawyer. Despite her change in status, she continued to lecture at the training school, and even after her move to New York City in 1884 she returned to San Francisco each spring for the commencement exercises. As a means of raising money for the training school, Kate Wiggin privately published

Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) lived in Hollis Maine, New York City, and Santa Barbara and San Franciso California. She received her education through "dame school", home study, district school, female seminary, and academy, later attending a kindergarten training class. Wiggin started teaching kindergarten in 1877, and founded San Francisco's Silver Street training school in 1880. She supported kindergarten movement throughout her life; the Story of Patsy and The Birds' Christmas Carol , Wiggin's first books, were written as fundraising efforts. She co-wrote several books with her sister, Nora Archibald Smith.
