HE GAVE ...TEACHERS Who REALLY is the 'Faithful and Discreet Slave'? Second Edition By David Aspinall A Testimony about the Need for Teachers:
BEFORE the first serious cracks began to show in my faith in the Watchtower, God had already set me up for a soft fall. I was reading books I shouldn't have. Since all Jehovah's Witnesses officially believe that the only good food comes from the organization's table, I should never have started collecting non-JW books. But my years as a pioneer and trouble shooter (someone publishers take along on difficult calls) had taught me that the weapons the Watchtower supplies were inadequate. Books like Is the Bible the Word of God? and Aid to Bible Understanding, while impressive to theuneducated JW and Joe Public, didn't make much of a dent in the armour of half-educated unbelievers. Rather than dismiss such 'difficult' calls as goats,
One thing that became apparent fairly early in my book collecting: most of the best books I found defending the Bible were written by clergymen! This became especially important later on, when I had to look more closely at the original books of C.T Russell and Joseph Rutherford. Since the Watchtower no longer published any of these books by its founders, they made quite the trophy on my bookshelves, never failing to impress fellow Witnesses who visited. Of course, neither they nor I would likely ever read them anyway why read 'old light' when we had so much fine literature with up-to-date 'spiritual food'? Nevertheless, though my faith in the organization was as yet

    Job's Fifth Friend:
An Ethical Critique of the Book of Job
Paper read at the Society of Biblical Literature International Meeting, Helsinki and Lahti, Finland, August 1999. This paper is unpublished, and should not be cited without the author's permission. First posted on the Web 30 May 2000.
There is one friend missing from the book of Job, and I am undertaking, even so unseasonably late, to fill that role. It is a friend who makes a critique, not of the character Job/ 1/ but of the book of Job, a fifth friend who calls into question not the ethical integrity of the man Job, as the first four did, but the ethical integrity of the book about Job./ 2/
Myself, I love the book of Job with all my heart-though it would name me for my speech a false friend and a 'torturer-comforter',/ 3/ as Job his friends (16.2)-and I call it into question only on behalf of itself, so that its angularity and its cunning should be the better taken the measure of and so that it should not lie forever in the hands of timid and sugary theologians. I say its angularity because of its awkwardness in knowing its own mind and telling it, and its cunning because of its singular capacity to persuade its readers of its innocence in the face of its dubious ethics.
Here are four sites of ethical difficulty in the book of Job:
    1. The rationale for the imposition of Job's suffering.

Grace and Peace to all. Alexander Whyte (1836-1921) was a famous Scottish minister, often described as the "last of the Puritans." During forty years at the pulpit of Free St. George's in Edinburgh he established a reputation as a graphic and compelling preacher to an extent probably unparalleled even in a nation of preachers. In 1909 he became principal of New College and taught NT literature there. He wrote many devotional books including Lord, Teach Us to Pray , from which comes this excerpt. Some of the language and images are odd to us, but I think you will understand the meaning without any real problem.
Pastor Mike Non-Fiction A People's History of the United States Howard Zinn This is a look at American History from the perspective of the downtrodden and underclass in America - the Indian, the black slave, the Irish immigrant, etc. This is a must-read for all Historians looking for a fresh perspective. First Presbyterian Church Augusta, Georgia
Romans 15:23-33 The outward and upward movement of the gospel Dr. Raymond C. Ortlund, Jr. 28 January 2001 When God poured out the Holy Spirit in the days of the early church, he unleashed into this world a transforming power. And the newness he created did not just remake the isolated individual here and there; it created a new community bursting with energy, conviction and purpose. The world had never seen anything like it. And God is at work in the same way among us today. The book of Romans teaches the doctrines of that transforming power (1:1-11:36) and opens up the application of that power (12:1-15:13).
