Scottish Presbyterian Alexander Whyte
by Maureen Bradley
Alexander Whyte was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, in a two-room thatched weaver's cottage. His mother, Janet Thomson, was unmarried at the time of his birth and did not marry his father, John Whyte. Soon after Alexander's birth his father left for America and Janet never saw him again. She struggled to support her son working long hours at the loom and in the summer helping local farmers in harvesting. Though from humble origins as far as physical substance, young Alexander was surrounded by people who held religion in high regard. There were four churches in the town representing the four main divisions within the Presbyterian Church. Sunday mornings he went with his mother to the Free Church, in the afternoon to the Relief Church with his grandmother, and in the evening he went to the Auld Licht Church by himself. Thus at an early age Alexander sought God and hoped that one day he would be a minister. His endeavors to obtain an education were difficult, for his mother rarely had the funds needed to pay his tuition at the elementary school. He did excel in the little schooling he had but at the age of ten was forced to give up his scholastic efforts to work as a herd-boy for a year. He developed a passion for books at an early age and though unable to purchase any, he was able to borrow them. Janet Thomson sympathized with her son's desire to be a minister but due to their meager circumstances was unable to see a way to accomplish this. So at the age of thirteen Alexander agreed to be an apprentice to James Ogilvy, a shoemaker. His determination to get an education did not cease in his apprenticeship. He subscribed to a self-educating magazine and paid a young boy to hold up books for him while be made shoes. When he was fifteen he joined three weavers in a study of arithmetic in their spare time. Also contacts with various friends helped him obtain other studies. Learning for Alexander was a part of living.

PREFACE
It is not the purpose of this Preface to anticipate the biography of Dr. Whyte, now being prepared by Dr. G. Freeland Barbour, or to provide a considered estimate of the great preacher’s work as a whole. But it may be well briefly to explain the appearance of the present volume, and to take it, so far as it goes, as a mirror of the man. The desire has been expressed in various quarters that this sequence of sermons on prayer should appear by itself. Possibly it may be followed at a later date by a representative volume of discourses, taken from different points in Dr. Whyte’s long ministry. It is a curious fact that he who was by general consent the greatest Scottish preacher of his day published during his lifetime no volume of Sunday morning sermons, though his successive series of character studies, given as evening lectures, were numerous and widely known. 1. One is his wonderful gift of

The Church
on the threshold
When God calls a sinner, He does not repent of it. God does not, as many friends do, love one day and hate another; or as princes, who make their subjects favorites and afterwards throw them into prison. This is the blessedness of a saint; his condition admits of no altercation. God’s call is founded upon His decree, and His decree is immutable. Acts of grace cannot be reversed. God blots out His people’s sins, but not their names.

The experiences Bunyan records in Grace Abounding are seen in the characters of The Pilgrim's Progress, and there is little doubt that he could not have written the great allegory had he not experienced God's saving mercy recounted in the autobiography. It has an undying vitality and perpetual youth about it, is a record of Puritan experience unsurpassed, and a spiritual stimulus of great value The Early Life of Howell Harris Bennett, Richard

A Late-Victorian Minister's Library
By John P. Vaudry
Fall 1996 Channels, Vol. 12 No. 4 John P. Vaudry is the pastor at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Wingham, Ontario, and serves on the Issues Committee of The Renewal Fellowship. Dr. David Perrie (1857-1930) ministered to the people of St. Andrew's, Wingham, Ontario, for 36 years (1894-1930), and was elected Moderator of the General Assembly in 1929. In 1925, when "continuing" Presbyterians held a Congress in St. Andrew's, Toronto, Ontario, just before the momentous disruption Assembly, David Perrie was chosen to preach the opening sermon. Obviously, his ministry was highly valued in his own parish and well beyond. Dr. Perrie believed in a teaching ministry: his expository preaching had depth and power. Such a ministry could only be sustained by a union of piety and scholarship. Of his hidden life of prayer we know practically nothing. By its very nature the devotional life is personal and private, and David Perrie was a very private man. Of his labour in the study, however, we do know something. We are at least aware of some of the books and periodicals he read and valued. The purpose of this article is to indicate some of the material in the library of a Presbyterian minister (and leader in the resistance to church union) whose ministry began toward the close of Queen Victoria's reign and who retained much of the older outlook.
