I can't think off-hand of any other poem discussing the U.S. flag that is as well known within the U.S. as this one. The author, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), was one of the leading American poets of his day and a prominent abolitionist. The poem describes an episode in the American Civil War. It is September 1862, and Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces have invaded Maryland. The Confederate corps commanded by Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson passed through the town of Frederick.
"Barbara Frietchie"
by John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892 Up from the meadows rich with corn,
Clear in the cool September morn,
The clustered spires of Frederick stand
Green-walled by the hills of Maryland.
Round about them orchards sweep,
Apple and peach tree fruited deep, Fair as the garden of the Lord To the eyes of the famished rebel horde

John Greenleaf Whittier
Whittier was once considered a national treasure; his birthday was a holiday in many states, and his verse memorized by schoolchildren. Whittier's poetry is out of fashion today, but many of his poems on Quaker themes can still be read with pleasure and value, especially by Friends or those interested in Quaker faith and history. That's why this selection of his poetry is being posted here. A brief autobiography of John Greenleaf Whittier can be found here

THE KING'S MISSIVE
Under the great hill sloping bare
To cove and meadow and Common lot,
In his council chamber and oaken chair,
Sat the worshipful Governor Endicott.
A grave, strong man, who knew no peer,
In the Pilgrim land, where he ruled in fear
Of God, not man, and for good or ill
Held his trust with an iron will. He had shorn with his sword the cross from out
The flag and cloven the may-pole down

John Greenleaf Whittier: Selected Poems
by John Greenleaf Whittier, Brenda Wineapple (Editor). Library of America. From the publisher: "A devout Quaker who became a passionate poetic spokesman for the antislavery movement, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–92) was one of the most beloved American poets of his era. In the years before the Civil War, he campaigned tirelessly against slavery in poems that include “Ichabod,” his famous denunciation of Daniel Webster for his support of the Fugitive Slave Law."

  • Whittier's Study Romantic poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 - 1892) was a Victorian superstar in the latter half of the 19th century. Many of his New England ballads are set in New Hampshire where he immortalized characters from the mountain, lakes and seacoast areas. Whittier is still big in Amesbury, just over the border from the NH seacoast area. His image looms large in this 1999 mural by artist Jon Mooers.
Whittier's birthplace in nearby Haverhill is also open to the public and until this visit, we didn't know there were both Whittier "home" and "homestead" museums. A writer, devout Quaker, teacher, editor and staunch abolitionist, Whittier moved to Amesbury with his mother, aunt and sister in 1836 and lived here 56 years. Everyone in town we asked proudly pointed us toward this old house on Friend Street. Open seasonally, we arrived for one of the last open days on a gorgeous fall afternoon.
Whittier enlarged the house, raising the original building at the left up and adding another story, then adding the section to the right.

With warning hand I mark Time's rapid flight,
    From Life's glad morning to its solemn night;
Yet, through the dear Lord's love, I also show
There's light above me by the shade I throw.

SUCH SENTIMENTS AS THESE epitomize the life and example of this well-loved American poet, hymn writer, and political campaigner for the anti-slavery cause. Born to a farming family at East Haverhill, Massachusetts, and raised in the Quaker faith, Whittier had only a basic education, but was an avid reader. Though not a robust lad, he was expected to take his share in the daily labours of a not-very-profitable farm. His familiarity with the sights and sounds of nature and his deep love for God’s creation is revealed in the affectionate warmth of his ballads, poetry, and works of prose. It was after being introduced at 14 years of age to the works of the Scottish poet Robert Burns that young John discovered in himself a "way with words." In later life he recalled his youthful leanings toward a literary career, and told how, in spite of the genuine misgivings of his father, he worked his way through two years’ schooling at Haverhill Academy, supporting himself as a shoemaker and schoolteacher. In 1826 his first poem
