Biography
Whitman is considered to be one of the United States' greatest poets. Born near Long Island, he lived in New York for a time, and many of his poems celebrate the city and its' inhabitants. He worked as a writer, printer, editor, teacher, and even as a hospital aide during the Civil War. He was deeply interested in politics and examining democracy as a practice and an ideal. He traveled throughout the US and Europe, and he also visited Cuba . Some of his best-known works are his book of poems, Leaves of Grass (1855) and such individual poems as "Oh Captain! My Captain!" and "Song of the Open Road."Though dead before the start of the Spanish-American War, some of Whitman's writings reflect the national confidence and pride which led to enthusiasm for the war.

LITR 4232: American Renaissance UHCL, spring 2002 Student Research Project Tuesday, 9 April: Walt Whitman, introduction 2846-9. “There Was a Child Went Forth” (handout), selections from Song of Myself Reader: Laura Haynes Discussion notes recorder: Diane Tincher Objective 3 Equality, Individuality, Gender To use literature as a basis for discussing representative problems and subjects of American culture (New Historicism), such as equality; race, gender, class; the family; the individual and the community; nature; the writer's conflicted presence in an anti-intellectual society. These two poems carry so much material they could go any many directions whether political, religiously to unreligious. It could be considered very opinionated. I chose the view of gender and how Whitman sets it apart or functioning together. He talks about how everyone is an individual, and then develops lines that are very prejudice and stereotypical. He wants the world to know what is going on in this era. It is kind of like he introduces these tough subject under the table. Writers were not able to do what Whitman could do with tough subjects, but he was the founder of bending the rules Selections Chosen: Poem: “There was a Child went Forth” “Song of Myself” Questions:
  • Walt Whitman states on page 2913 (1314-1315) I contradict myself, do you feel that Whitman does indeed contradict himself? And Why?

The high and controversial emotions which surrounded Whitman in life attended his death: in the same issue that carried his obituary, the New York Times declared that he could not be called "a great poet unless we deny poetry to be an art," while one funeral speech declared that "He walked among men, among writers, among verbal varnishers and veneerers, among literary milliners and tailors, with the unconscious majesty of an antique god." Whitman's First Leaves of Grass On this day in 1855 Walt Whitman registered the title Leaves of Grass with the clerk of the United States District Court, New York; the first edition was published seven weeks later. Over the next thirty-six years Whitman would add many more poems and publish seven more editions, all in an effort to "Unscrew the locks from the doors! / Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs!"

Whitman, Walt (1819-1892)
page: The poem traces the night spent together and the morning that brings the poet new life in the ability to care for the dead soldier and an acceptance of death, enacted in the loving burial. Whitman's mission in the "Drum Taps" poems, as in his life, becomes caring for the sick and wounded, bringing them loving affection and asking for love in return. The letters that he later received over many years from soldiers he had met testify movingly to the power of that friendship. Sponsor Message.
The dream of a united America, and the search for a personal friend, give way in the later poems to a desire for fulfillment in death. The "cries of anguish" of the battlefield give rise to a tempered optimism and a pervasive affection that does not depend on personal sexual identity. "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd" The many losses of the Civil War were echoed in the loss of President Lincoln. Whitman's elegy for Lincoln, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," expresses the national sense of loss in terms of personal love.

page: Celebrating an ideal of manly love in both its spiritual and physical aspects, Walt Whitman has exerted a profound and enduring influence on gay literature. Born in West Hills, Long Island, Whitman was the first author of working-class origins to reach prominence in the United States. Although he was in many ways a disciple of poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, he lacked Emerson's financial assurance and Harvard education. Sponsor Message.
Whitman was a product of the unsettled and mobile life of the poor and largely self-taught. In his early years, he worked variously as a carpenter, printer, and country schoolteacher. Whitman's Early Publications His first published work was completely undistinguishedmediocre formal verse and moral reform tracts, including the temperance novel Franklin Evans One of Whitman's earliest publications was the short story "The Child's Champion" (1841), later reprinted as "The Child and the Profligate." The twelve-year-old Charles is dragged into a tavern and an attempt is made to force him to drink. Charles, who has sworn a temperance oath to his mother, resists and is saved by Lankton, a dissipated but prosperous client, who takes Charles into his bed and a union blessed by a hovering angel.

http://www.lambda.net/~maximum/whitman.html
Uncle Walt Walter Whitman was born in the Long Island town of West Hills, New York on May 31, 1819. He spent much of his childhood in Brooklyn where his father worked as a carpenter. He loved the excitement of living and working in New York City and interacting with people. Whitman taught school in rural parts of Long Island, worked as a type setter, and held editorial jobs at several newspapers. He is now considered America's greatest poet, but in his lifetime, he was often put on the defensive for his writings. The term "homosexual" did not enter into common usage in American culture until after his death, but Whitman wrote profusely of his love of men, or "comrades." No Labor-Saving Machine

Nor reminiscence of any deed of courage for America,
Nor literary success nor intellect, nor book for the book-shelf,
But a few carols vibrating through the air I leave

Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892)
Passing stranger! you do not know
How longingly I look upon you,
You must be he I was seeking,
Or she I was seeking
(It comes to me as a dream)
I have somewhere surely
Lived a life of joy with you,
All is recall'd as we flit by each other,
Fluid, affectionate, chaste, matured, You grew up with me, Were a boy with me or a girl with me, I ate with you and slept with you, your body has become not yours only nor left my body mine only, You give me the pleasure of your eyes, face, flesh as we pass, You take of my beard, breast, hands, in return, I am not to speak to you, I am to think of you when I sit alone or wake at night, alone I am to wait, I do not doubt I am to meet you again I am to see to it that I do not lose you.
