Walt Whitman (1819-1892) by Steven Olsen-Smith BIOGRAPHY The family of Walter and Louisa Van Velsor Whitman, working-class parents of the man who would come to be known as America’s representative poet, embodied the unique potential and internal contradictions of the young nation upon which their son would project his own exuberant sense of self-worth. An outspoken supporter of democratic ideals and the rights of common Americans, and an opponent of religious orthodoxy after the example of Thomas Paine, the senior Walter Whitman failed repeatedly as a businessman, is thought to have been emotionally volatile with his wife and children, and was probably an alcoholic. Louisa, who from youth absorbed the best qualities of the Quaker faith and bearing, suffused warm maternal affection and maintained cohesiveness within the family before and after the death of her husband in 1855. Born Walter Whitman, Jr., in West Hills, Long Island , on May 31, 1819 , “Walt” was their second child, following elder brother Jesse and followed by younger sisters Mary Elizabeth and Hannah Louisa Whitman, and by the patriotic namesakes Andrew Jackson, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson Whitman. A fifth brother had died in infancy, and the Whitmans’ ninth and last child, Edward, was mentally retarded and physically disabled but beloved by Walt Whitman throughout life and the main beneficiary of the poet’s will in 1892.

Very well, then I contradict myself,
I am large, I contain multitudes. Let that which stood in front go behind, let that which was behind advance to the front, let bigots, fools, unclean persons, offer new propositions, let the old propositions be postponed. The art of art, the glory of expression and the sunshine of the light of letters, is simplicity. To have great poets, there must be great audiences too.

"O Captain! My Captain!"

Proof sheet with corrections in ink, 1888
Manuscript Division
Walt Whitman (1819-1892) wrote this dirge for the death of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Published to immediate acclaim in the New York City Saturday Press , "O Captain! My Captain!" was widely anthologized during his lifetime. In the 1880s, when Whitman gave public lectures and readings, he was asked to recite the poem so often that he said: "I'm almost sorry I ever wrote [it]," though it had "certain emotional immediate reasons for being." While Whitman is renowned as the most innovative of American poets, this poem is a rare example of his use of rhymed, rhythmically regular verse, which serves to create a somber yet exalted effect. Whitman had envisioned Lincoln as an archangel captain, and reportedly dreamed the night before the assassination about a ship entering harbor under full sail. Restlessly creative, Whitman was still revising "O Captain! My Captain!" decades after its creation. Pictured here is a proof sheet of the poem, with his corrections, which was readied for publication in 1888. The editors apparently had erred by picking up earlier versions of punctuation and whole lines that had appeared in the poem prior to Whitman's 1871 revision. On the back is written:

BIOGRAPHY
Walt Whitman (1819-1892). One of nine children, Whitman was born in Huntington, Long Island, and grew up in Brooklyn, where his father worked as a carpenter. At age eleven, after five years of public school, Whitman took a job as a printer's assistant. He learned the printing trade and, before his twentieth birthday, became editor of the Long Islander , a Huntington newspaper. He edited several newspapers in the New York area and one in New Orleans before leaving the newspaper business in 1848. He then lived with his parents, worked as a part-time carpenter, and began writing

"Are you folks still with me? Excellent. Here we are at a page which gives a brief insight into my life and poetry . I hope you enjoy it.
I was born in West Hills, Long Island, New York on 31st May, 1819, and grew up in the Brooklyn region with my Quaker parents. During my early adult life, I taught in various Long Island schools and also worked as a printer and journalist in the New York city area for such newspapers as the Brooklyn Eagle . I mainly wrote articles about politics, civics and the arts and, consequently, you will find that much of this is reflected in my poetry. In my opinion, New York city is the greatest in the world.
My favorite pastime was to ride on the stage coaches and ferries just to meet folk because I like to think of myself as poet of the people. In New York there are so many diverse population groups due to the huge amounts of foreigners who emigrated to America and arrived at Ellis Island with unerring regularity. It is these who I considered particularly interesting. They lent a kind of continental feeling to the streets of New York, while at the same time they brought the cuisine and mentality of their foreign lands to our truly great democratic country.
Around the time of my death on 26th March, 1892, the whole immigration concept had become somewhat problematic. The vast numbers of people who came pouring into Ellis Island made housing them very difficult and soon our supposed 'land of the free' witnessed a type of ghettoisation in which poor immigrants were herded into tenement buildings. It upset me very much to see fellow human beings treated in this way and forced me to reconsider whether America had yet to acquire the status of the greatest democratic country in the world."

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. Walt Whitman's publication of Leaves of Grass in July 1855 represented nothing short of a radical shift in American poetry. Written in free verse Leaves of Grass (which he printed himself), he did not include his name on the title page. Instead, he presented his readers with a picture of himself, dressed in casual working man's clothes, as the representative of the American collective self. Challenging tradition and shocking readers, Whitman's book was a revolutionary manifesto advocating a new style and a new purpose for American literature, as well as a new identity for the American poet.
No one could have predicted from Whitman's upbringing that he would emerge as a revolutionary poet. Born to a working-class family in New York, Walter Whitman received only six years of formal education before going to work at the age of eleven. He started out as an office boy and later became a printer's apprentice, a journalist, a teacher, and finally an editor. Over the course of his career, he edited or contributed to more than a dozen newspapers and magazines in the New York area, as well as working briefly in 1848 in New Orleans as an editor for the New Orleans Crescent. As a newspaperman, he was exposed to and participated in the important political debates of his time, usually affiliating himself with the radical Democrats.

Leaves of Grass . Brooklyn, N.Y., 1855. This is a copy of the extremely rare first printing of the first edition of Leaves of Grass . This slim volume, containing twelve poems and a long prose preface, was continually revised and enlarged by Whitman. The book went through eleven successive editions until the time of Whitman's death in 1892, by which time 283 poems had been added. Walt Whitman, 1819-1892.
Song of the Broad-axe ; with illustrations cut on wood by Wharton H. Esherick. Philadelphia: Centaur Press, 1924. Wharton H. Esherick (1887-1970) of Paoli, Pennsylvania, was a woodworker and wood engraver, best-known for his "free-form" sculptural furniture. His illustrations for books and prints, however, were done in a more traditional style. Walt Whitman, 1819-1892.

WALT WHITMAN (1819-1892)
Leaves of Grass . Brooklyn, N.Y., 1855. Walt Whitman - a remarkable and individual poet, prose writer, journalist, philosopher, outspoken herald of American democracy, and supreme egoist - is one of America's towering literary figures, and his Leaves of Grass is one of the most celebrated and, along with Faulkner's The Marble Faun , most sought-after of American first editions. This slim volume, containing twelve poems and a long prose preface, was certainly Whitman's personal favorite, and he continued to revise and enlarge it through eleven successive editions to the time of his death (by which time 283 poems had been added). The poems are imbues with a fiercely independent American spirit that was so much a part of Whitman's character. The copy exhibited is a later issue of the first edition. Since copies of the first edition were bound up as required, they show all kind of subtle variants in text and binding between the earliest and latest issues. This copy is distinguished as a later issue by its eight preliminary pages of advertisements or reviews, and by its green cloth binding, blind stamped on its back cover, with the title in gold on the front cover and spine.

walt whitman (1819-1892)
I sing the body electric,
The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them,
They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them,
And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul.
Was it doubted that those who corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves?
And if those who defile the living are as bad as they who defile the dead?
And if the body does not do fully as much as the soul?
And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul?
The love of the body of man or woman balks account, the body itself balks account,
That of the male is perfect, and that of the female is perfect.
The expression of the face balks account, But the expression of a well-made man appears not only in his face, It is in his limbs and joints also, it is curiously in the joints of his hips and wrists, It is in his walk, the carriage of his neck, the flex of his waist and knees, dress does not hide him, The strong sweet quality he has strikes through the cotton and broadcloth, To see him pass conveys as much as the best poem, perhaps more

An elderly gentleman I talked with (he is a portrait painter and a distant relative of the poet), who was much with him, particularly through the years in his middle age and later (1845 to 1870), tells me that Walt Whitman, in the elements of his character, had deepest sternness and hauteur, not easily aroused, but coming forth at times, and then well understood by those who knew him best as something not to be trifled with. The gentleman alluded to (he is a reader and thorough accepter of Leaves of Grass ) agrees with me in my delineation of his benevolence, evenness and tolerant optimism, yet insists that at the inner framework of the poet there has always been, as he expresses it, “a combination of hot blood and fighting qualities.” He says my outline applies more especially to his later years; that Walt Whitman has gradually brought to the front the attributes I dwell upon, and given them control. His theory is, in almost his own words, that there are two natures in Walt Whitman. The one is of immense suavity, self-control, a mysticism like the occasional fits of Socrates, a pervading Christ-like benevolence, tenderness and sympathy (the sentiment of the intaglio frontispiece portrait, which I showed him, and he said he has seen exactly that look “in the old man,” and more than once during 1863-64, though he never observed it before or since). But these qualities, though he has enthroned them and for many years governed his life by them, are duplicated by far sterner ones. No doubt he has mastered the latter, but he has them. How could Walt Whitman (said my interlocutor) have taken the attitude toward evil, and things evil, which is behind every page of his utterance in

    WALT WHITMAN

Walt Whitman, in my talks with him at that time, always disclaimed any lofty intention in himself or his poems. If you accepted his explanations, they were simple and commonplace. But when you came to think about these explanations, and to enter into the spirit of them, you found that the simple and commonplace with him included the ideal and the spiritual. So it may be said that neither he nor his writings are growths of the ideal from the real, but are the actual real lifted up into the ideal. With Walt Whitman his body, his outward life, his inward spiritual existence and his poetry were all one; in every respect each tallied the other, and any one of them could always be inferred from any other. He said to me one day (I forget now in what connection): “I have imagined a life which should be that of the average man in average circumstances, and still grand, heroic.” There is no doubt that such an ideal had been constantly before his mind, and from moment to moment, molded upon it. He seldom became excited in conversation, or at all events seldom showed excitement; he rarely raised his voice or used any gestures. I never knew him to be in a bad temper. He seemed always pleased with those about him. He did not generally wait for a formal introduction; upon meeting any person for the first time he very likely stepped forward, held out his hand (either left or right, whichever happened to be disengaged), and the person and he were acquainted at once.
