This list contains names found in Christ Church books catalogued on OLIS , the Oxford University online union catalogue. Additional information on book provenances may also be found in old catalogues, shelflists and library accounts held in Library Records Names may be present in books for a variety of reasons. It was the custom for many years for members of the House to present books to the Library on graduation , and such donations were often recorded in inscriptions. In these cases, the books were unlikely ever to have been in the personal library of the donor, who may have given money for their purchase rather than the books themselves. The presence of more famous names may record presentations by authors of one of their works, either to the library itself or to a previous owner. A proportion of these names represents former owners of the books, which later made their way by bequest, donation or purchase to the library at Christ Church. Finally, there are a small number of names of binders, second-hand booksellers and authors of letters found inside books. Forms of name are taken where possible from the Library of Congress Name Authority File, supplemented by Joseph Foster's

    compiled by
    Marjorie Smith Ward
..all links checked and working Feb 2004.. ..would anyone like to help with this project....all you need to do is type info in like an e-mail and send to me..spelling can even be wrong..let me know..mudfacemarge@Aol.com.. co.. child of do..daughter of os.. one stone so.. son of wo.. wife of ho.. husband of **my apology..I see on Cyndi's listing I mentioned complete listings for a few cemeteries....for the Hurd Cemetery the listing would be complete only through 1929...The listing for St Francis is not complete either...thanks...***my granddaughter is here and I can only do so much housework..so I sit and watch her and do this..I generally let info sit and come back and go over it again. It is very hard to distinguish some of the writing so there could be some mistakes. Information as shown even where there is an apparent mistake. Sometimes though you have to think a bit..you may see dates that look wrong..I asked mom about one..sure enough..the son listed was actually the grandson.. You may see Black and a few lines below Blacke. It just may be correct too.. This may occur for several reasons. The person transcribing information may have made a mistake, the person putting the information into type may have made a mistake. The person inscribing a headstone perhaps made a mistake. You may find the same people with their name spelled numerous ways. Perhaps one part of a family was mad at another part, so they changed the spelling or simply they wanted each line of a family distinguished from another line. They probably just changed the spelling as they felt like it!
