This test had previously been scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, but was postponed because of a failure of the Simulated Launch Adapter (SLA), a non-tactical piece of test equipment used as a safety device in pre-flight readiness checks. The delay had no effect on missile or target readiness. This will be the sixth flight test of the PAC-3 system. The PAC-3 Missile is a high velocity, hit-to-kill missile and is the next generation Patriot missile being developed to provide increased capability against advanced tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and hostile aircraft. Test objectives include demonstrating system/missile capability to engage a full-body tactical ballistic missile using remote operations which include employing the launching station several kilometers from the radar and engagement control stations; and demonstrating intercept using the tactical software which allows the seeker to select the optimal aimpoint on the target. The first two missions were developmental tests that consisted of missiles with special instrumentation packages in place of the seeker. Roving Sands 2001 Set For June 15 Kickoff World largest joint-theater air and missile defense exercise will involve around 15,000 soldiers Roving Sands, the world’s largest joint-theater air and missile defense training exercise, kicks off at Fort Bliss for a 10th straight year June 15. This premier exercise will involve approximately 15,000 soldiers from all services at various sites across the United States. The exercise is slated to run June 15-24 and will include about 400 troops from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, observers from Israel and Turkey, and visitors from other nations, in addition to U.S. forces. Roving Sands 2001 will combine the command, control, communications and computer elements, as well as the air-defense and aviation assets of the Army, Air Force, Marines and Navy, with multinational forces in a joint, integrated air-defense scenario. COMMENTS? QUESTIONS? TRINITY SITE, A HALF-CENTURY AFTER THE WORLD'S FIRST ATOMIC BOMB Those men standing a few miles from the blast site truly must have wondered what they had unleashed when they saw the awesome result of nuclear chain reaction rise up from the desert floor in front of them! The scientists who assembled that first Atomic Bomb in a ranch house a couple of miles to the south had just ushered in the Nuclear Era. The world would never be the same. "Ground Zero," Trinity Site, is deceptive in its solitude and remoteness. Except on two days a year, the 1st weekend in April and the 1st weekend in October, when the site is opened to the public. You can actually stand on the exact point where the bomb was detonated. If you came by this way without the big fence that surrounds the place, and the obelisk marking the site, if it was just desert, you'd never suspect an Atomic Bomb was exploded here. There is a slight indentation in the ground, the grass is stunted and brown if it grows at all, but that's about it. We stayed at the Sands Motel on the south end of Carrizozo. Not a pretentious place by any description, but clean and comfortable and the only motel I know where they have Direct TV in the rooms and you can click through a dozen or so movie channels.

Trinity Site Tour Trinity Site Monument The popular, interesting Trinity Site Tour begins and ends in San Antonio, 10 miles south of Socorro. The Trinity Site is the site of the first detonation of an atomic bomb in 1945. The scenery is wonderful, since the area has not been grazed since 1945. The tour is quite flat but there may be winds since it is wide open. There are great views of the low Oscura Mountains to the east. The Little Burro Mountains are visible to the southeast of the route and the Mockingbird Mountains are south. Interestingly, the southern-most road is the northern perimeter of the White Sands Missile Range Century that starts and ends in Tularosa. There is no public vehicular traffic after entering the Stallion gate which is a real treat. Since we ride on the weekend there is very little worker vehicle traffic. Spring or fall is the best time for this ride since it is very hot in the summer. From San Antonio ride east about 12 miles on US380 to the Stallion Range turnoff. Then ride south about 5 miles to the Stallion Range entrance. At the entrance you can pickup pamphlets if you don't have one. Then ride south about 13 miles south. Turn left (east) at the Permanent High Explosive Testing Site (there are signs) and ride the final 4 miles. Soon after the turn the circular Trinity Site area can be seen in the distance. A side trip to the McDonald ranch, where the first bomb was assembled, is sometimes allowed on the way south. This is about a mile off the pavement on a packed gravel road rideable by road bikes and tandems.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRINITY SITE Triniyt Site, whee the worlds' first bomb was exploded in 1945, is open to the pubic twice a year on the first Saturday in April and October. Trinity is located on the northern end of the 3.200-squar-mile White Sands Missile Range, M.M., between the towns of Carrizozo and Socorro, N.M. There are two ways of entering the restricted missile range on tour days. Visitors can enter through the range's Stallion Range Center which if five miles south of Highway 380. The turnoff is 12 miles east of San Antonio, N.M., and 53 miles west of Carrizozo, N.M. The Stallion gate will be open 8a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors arriving at the gate between those hours wil receive handouts and will be allowed to drive unescorted the 17 miles to Trinity Site. The road is paved and marked. The other way of entering the missile range is by travelling with a caravan sponsored by the Alamogordo (N.M.) Chamber of Commerce. The caravan forms at the Otero County Fairgrounds in Alamogordo and leaves at 8 a.m. Visitors entering this way will travel as an escorted group with military police to and from Trinity Site. The drive is 170 miles round trip. There are no service station facilities on the missile range. The caravan is scheduled to leave Trinity Site at 12:30 p.m. for the return to Alamogordo. The caravan may leave later if there is a large number of vehicles in the returning caravan. Included on the Trinity Site tour is Ground Zero where the atomic bomb was placed on a 100-foot steel tower and exploded on July 16, 1945. A small monument now marks the spot. Visitors also see the McDonald ranch house where the world's first plutonium core for a bomb was assembled. The missile range provides historical photographs and a Fat Man bomb casing for display. There are no ceremonies or speakers.
