Why the Tortoise? One of Ringmer's most celebrated visitors was the pioneering naturalist Gilbert White (1720 - 1793). His letters have been published under the title of The Natural History of Selbourne and are world famous for the detail in which he observed the creatures and plants around the village of Selbourne in Hampshire where he was curate. White wrote in his letter from Ringmer dated 8th October 1770 " A land tortoise, which has been kept for thirty years in a little walled court belonging to the house where I am now visiting, retires under ground about the middle of November , and comes forth again about the middle of April. When it first appears in the spring it discovers very little inclination towards food; but in the the height of summer grows voracious: Milky plants such as lettuces, dandelions, sowthistles, are its favourite dish. " With such a famous reptile as a former inhabitant the village of Ringmer has adopted the tortoise as it's symbol.

The catalogue file at the British Museum (Natural History) suggests Wilkes' vital dates are 17 to 1811. I think that is unlikely as a death date. As this would imply his description (in a work published in weekly installments) was published 5 years posthumously. However, my source that suggested a death date of 1829 for Wilkes suggested a birthdate of 1796, the year the Encycl.Londinensis began publication, so probably his biographical dates should simply be regarded as uncertain. Also recorded are the names of John Harvard, founder of Harvard University, who married a local lady Ann Sadler in 1636; and William Penn who founded and gave Pennsylvania its name. He likewise married a local lady, Gulielma Springett in 1672.
A tortoise, to say the least, is an unusual emblem which some people may not find it easy to get excited about. In fact Timothy Tortoise is famous in Ringmer and Timothy motifs can be seen on signs, badges, letter headings, on the millennium clock and in many other places.
Timothy was bought in 1740 from a sailor at Chichester Harbour for 2/6d (12½p)
The Tortoise Trust website refers to 'Gilbert White's "Timothy" Tortoise of Selborne'. To read more about the extraordinary tortoise world link to http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/algeria.html

David Allen : Missing collections of British and Irish vascular plants.
Botanists have been collecting vascular plants in the British Isles for scientific purposes for almost 700 years. The relative ease with which that type of material lends itself to indefinite preservation has resulted in the survival of an impressively high proportion of collections, even though in many documentation is inadequate or lacking. Since World War Two successive, still ongoing, attempts have been made to establish how many of the unitary bodies of specimens identified with particular individuals – that is herbaria in the strict sense as opposed to miscellaneous specimens – remain in being out of the total known or suspected to have once existed, and where they are now to be found. That all-time total currently stands at 2,830. Of those, 44 are known with reasonable certainty to have been destroyed but 745 remain untraced. Various reasons why many of that 745 could have escaped notice and may yet be located are discussed. BACK ] to list of abstracts

Background Thomas Pennant was born at the family home, Downing in Flintshire, North Wales on 14 June 1726. Following the tradition of the majority of 18th century gentry, he attended an Oxbridge college. He was a member of Queens College, Oxford, but like many of his contemporaries Pennant did not complete his formal training, received no degree but left Oxford with a clear vision of his life's work. Whilst at college he discovered the joy of travel and was affirmed in his love of cataloguing flora, fauna and antiquities of every sort. Pennant was the greatest Welsh travel writer of his time and one of the best British topographical authors, alongside Gilbert White (1720 - 1793) of Selbourne and Francis Grose (1731? - 1791). He had a gift for befriending and appreciating people which created opportunities at every stage of his career. Correspondents and advisors were constantly and consistently generous to his commissions and requests. It was no accident therefore that he succeeded to involve talented individuals in long term co-operative ventures. He also had the foresight to employ his own illustrators for his works and to collect material for his publications whilst in the region. Pennant was a prolific and untiring scholar whose wide interests influenced his contemporaries and successive scholars. He knew little Welsh, depending upon his scholar friends such as Reverend John Lloyd, Caerwys (1733 - 1793) to translate and research from original sources. However his respect for Wales, her language, people, history and landscape are evident in all his Welsh writings. He is remembered and celebrated as one of the foremost 18th century Welsh intellectuals and someone who loved and respected his fellow human beings. He was a man of honest and warm humanity whose qualities earned him the title of 'The father of Cambrian tourists.'

Perhaps the fact that his main publisher is the Sierra Club says that too. 22) GilbertWhite (1720 – 1793). The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne.

Steve Norwick's Suggestions For Further Reading
My daughter Rebecca-Maria asked me for a list of 20 very good books of nature writing. I generally like to recommend books to specific people. For example, some people particularly like animals stories, some like outdoor adventure. A few people read nature poetry. Some are interested mostly in philosophical and moral problems, and some in politics. A few people enjoy reading about environmental blight and pollution, but most of us only read these types of problem oriented books out of professional or spiritual need to be informed and warned. I am most interested in writing which deals with the whole of nature in some region, and which has rather complex literary value. I have listed 23 authors and several books for some of them. You might start by looking to see which books are available on line, or in paperback. Extended Nature Prose Essays 1) Edward Abbey (1927 - 1989) Desert Solitaire. N.Y.: McGraw, 1968 This is the story of a season which he spent as a ranger in Arches National Park. It is full of philosophy and adventure. Abbey is funny and political and grumpy all at the same time. He also wrote novels, some of which are famous, but none of which are as good as this. He also wrote many more books of essays but this is the best and the most coherent collection. 2) Mary Hunter Austin (1868 - 1934) Land of Little Rain. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1903. Reprinted by Univ. of New Mexico Pr., Albuquerque 1974.
