Anthology of ROMANTICISM
Selected and Edited by Ernest Bernbaum
Third Edition Revised and Enlarged.
New York: Ronald Press, 1948.
[from] Preface
These selections from the voluminous literature of the English Romantic Period (c. 1783-1832) were not chosen merely for historical reasons, or because they were popular in their own time (some were so, others were then almost unknown). This is not an herbarium, nor a museum of fossils; it is not a collection of flora or fauna, once alive, but now dead. It is an anthology in the true sense of the word, namely a gathering together of the choicest living flowers, the still unfaded efflorescence of the vast and fecund literature of English Romanticism. I have tried to reject any passage that is trash, though it may have been often included in previous books of selections, or though it may still have some curious antiquarian interest. Even in the brief section drawn from the Pre-Romantic Movement, the main purpose of which is historical, I have admitted very few specimens (fewer than in previous editions) that are of historical interest only.

Some famous Oriel names
There is a College tradition that Sir Thomas More was a student at Oriel, but this cannot be substantiated. A tradition in his family placed him at Canterbury College (where the Canterbury Quad of Christ Church now stands). Another tradition suggests that he may have lodged in St Mary Hall , but there are no records to prove or disprove this. However, it is certain that all the following were at Oriel: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Fellow 1845-1852
Poet and Critic Thomas Arnold (1795-1842)
Fellow 1815-1821
Headmaster of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
Student 1373
Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposed Richard II and crowned Henry of Bolingbroke as Henry IV. George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell (1778-1840)
Undergraduate 1794
Dandy and arbiter of fashion Joseph Butler (1692-1752)
Student 1715-1721
Philosopher. Bishop of Bristol and Dean of St Paul's 1740. Bishop of Durham 1750. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) Undergraduate 1841-1845 Author of Tom Brown's Schooldays and founder member of the Christian Socialists.

Victorian Interest in Natural History
Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901. During this period, the study of natural science was enormously appealing to the middle classes. In the nineteenth century, museums, botanical gardens, and other scientific exhibitions educated and entertained the general public and introduced them to the discoveries of science. Among the sciences, entomology proved an especially popular hobby. At the beginning of the John Curtis, 1791-1862. Fellow of the Linnean Society. Tracing the roots of environmentalism
By Patricia Olson-Elbanbuena / MindaNews / 30 May 2002 DAVAO CITY Environmentalism is a body of knowledge whose objectives, according to Dyer (1999), relate to the maintenance and enhancement of planetary and ecological stability. It works at the improvement of human life and at the same time, it aims at the conservation of resources and the solution of environmental problems. Tracing the roots of environmentalism from history may remind us of the importance of nature which is an idea as old as man. Reverence for the natural elements since the time of the pagans points at the immeasurable value planet earth has. The worth of nature was deeply-seated in the heart of the primitive man as he used to wander from land to land looking for food. In the time of the hunter-gatherer, love for nature was reflected in the way an individual adapted to his surroundings, even though it might have happened that there were occasions of razing a forest down just to catch a wildpig or a deer for food. The discovery of

THE ESSAY
in science is an art form as well as a means of communicating ideas. All scientists publish their findings somewhere, but relatively few produce books or monographs. Even fewer produce essays. Modern readers who are interested in evolution or natural history usually recognize the names Gould, Zimmer and Dawkins as essayists. But relatively few are those who have read Mayr, Simpson, Dobzhansky and many older writers. All of these authors are worth reading today. In some cases they are worth reading not only for the beauty of their prose and the forcefulness of their argument, but also to discover what earlier generations of scientists once thought. Darwin and Wallace are omitted here on purpose. You will find them on my Darwiniana Page
