Selborne Primary School
Our school is located in Perivale in the London Borough of Ealing, but it gets its name from the village of Selborne in Hampshire. The Selborne Society was founded in 1885 to commemorate the life of Gilbert White (1720-1793) , the Curate of Selborne in Hampshire and father of British natural history. As well as his acute observations and understanding of the relationship between living organisms and their environment, White was also a talented writer. His observations are recorded in a series of letters published in 1789 as "The Natural History of Selborne", now a classic of English literature and still in print. In 1902, members of the Brent Valley branch of the Selborne Society created a bird sanctuary at Perivale Wood . The Society purchased the wood in 1920 to mark the bicentenary of Gilbert White's birth. It was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest (S.S.S.I.) in 1957 and upgraded to Local Nature Reserve Status in 1974. Perivale's links with Selborne in Hampshire led the school to being named after that village. The pupils of our school have visited the village and Gilbert White's house, and the school has access to Perivale Wood, which provides excellent facilities for the observation of birds, mammals, pond life, butterflies and other insects. Selborne School is now a primary school, but originally opened in 1936 as a secondary school for boys. The school still retains the "Technical Block" in which woodwork and metalwork were taught. This is currently used in the evenings for older students who are following the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. However, this block is likely to be demolished in 2005 and replaced by another building.

The attractive village of Selborne and its beautiful countryside is famous for its association with the 18th century naturalist Gilbert White. In his book The Natural History of Selborne , he meticulously records his observations on the plants, birds and animals of this lovely part of Hampshire. The Reverend Gilbert White (1720-1793) is regarded as England's first ecologist. He lived at "The Wakes" most of his life. The rooms have been furnished in the 18th century style and include items of his furniture, beautifully embroidered bed hangings and portraits of his family. The original manuscript is also on display.
    The Garden
Through Gilbert White's writings, the garden is probably one of the best documented of its type and is gradually being restored. Already established are his 'Quincunx', wooden ha-ha, alcove and 'Six Quarters' - beds to display many of the fascinating plants known to White. His brick path leads to the stone ha-ha, sundial and part of his fruit wall. Later additions include a spectacular laburnam arch, topiary and fragrant herb garden: all set against the backdrop of the magnificent beech-clad Selborne hanger.
The Oates Museum is devoted to the remarkable Oates family and in particular, Frank Oates, a Victorian explorer, and to Captain Lawrence Oates who accompanied Scott to the South Pole. There are illustrations and relics of both these adventures with a charming introduction in a "Gentleman's Study".

Gilbert White (1720-1793) was born and died in Selborne, Hampshire, England. He was later to become famed as a great naturalist, and put Selborne on the map with his book 'Tha Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne'. He was ordained as a priest after graduating from Oriel College, Oxford; but never actually practiced in Selborne, and instead focused on writing about natural history to pay his way. Gilberts home in Selborne was a small building that at one stage had been a butchers; and in 1756 he apparently planted four lime trees in order to 'hide the sight of blood and filth from ye windows'. You can still visit his gardens today. Thanks to First Science for biography info.

The Selborne Pioneer: Gilbert White as Naturalist and Scientist, a Re-examination
    [Auk, The]
The Selborne Pioneer: Gilbert White as Naturalist and Scientist, a Re-examination.-Ted Dadswcll. 2003. Ashgate Publishing, Hants, England, and Suite 420, 101 Cherry Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401- 4405. xviii + 238 pp., 13 black-and-white plates. ISBN 0-7546-0749- 6. Cloth, $79.95.-Gilbert White lived (1720-1793) in the agricultural village of Selborne, England, where "the human ecology was continuous with the non-human." The eldest of seven surviving children, his fishing and hunting as a young man "paved the way" for natural history, while gardening "gave him his naturalists' apprenticeship." He was also an Anglican cleric, a poet, and as Dadswell makes clear in this book, a remarkable pioneering naturalist and clear-headed scientist. White has been known primarily for the literary achievement of his Natural History of Selborne. Ironically, that work has enjoyed a worldwide readership over the centuries primarily because it was thought to be unscientific. Now, after the blossoming of ethology and behavioral biology of animals in the wild, it seems instead to have presaged those disciplines. White became known for his seemingly pedantic measuring to exact detail and his unconventional approach to problems. Much was said of his shouting through a megaphone at his pet tortoise, Timothy, and several writers have (incorrectly) extrapolated that he "played the trumpet" to his bees. he measured the size of hailstones to document what he meant by "large." Perhaps equally bizarre to 18th-century contemporaries was his detailed record-keeping of several species of crickets and the swallows of his district. His primary contribution was his combining of original field observations of birds with a scientific experimental approach to problems. However, a mythology of White evolved, in which his reputation grew as a quaint childlike observer of local trivia. he was said to be contented and a "bit lazy," with "no philosophical ambitions" and "never a victim of introspection."
