Journeys with Jesus: Notes to Myself
    Reflections By Dan Clendenin
    Essay for 30 April 2001
    A Boring Problem
Week of Monday, April 30, 2001
A few years ago I received an email from Diane Komp, former chief of pediatric oncology at Yale. She had visited our Stanford faculty fellowship, returned home, and written me this note: I printed out her email and taped it above my desk where it has hung for several years. Diane's note not only encouraged me; she articulated a phenomenon that I have experienced as I travel around the country to churches and universities. True, the university context presents special challenges to followers of Jesus. One could easily identify overt prejudices and blatant hostilities toward Christians, as illustrated by the recent incident at Tufts University between an InterVarsity chapter and the gay community. Some of these clashes represent honest and deep differences that need to be addressed, but others are no more than popular biases. You could also plot the waning Christian influence of many universities, as George Marsden has done in The Soul of the American University: From Protestant Establishment to Established Unbelief The problems caused by the myth of the Christless university are several. It isn't true, so we should stop bearing false witness. It has the unfortunate side effect of creating a victimhood mentality among evangelicals. Finally, it fosters an us-against-them mindset that views the university as an Other, an enemy, an opponent to be battled rather than as a distant cousin to be loved, embraced, and understood on its own terms. Altogether, the myth mires us in our legacy of separatism and cultural isolationism.

1.1. THE INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF ARCHAEOLOGY It is important that the benefit of hindsight does not make us forget the constraints of the social and intellectual context in which antiquarians lived and worked. We may learn a great deal by examining how early antiquaries and archaeologists tackled the formidable problem of making sense of the human past without the help of the libraries, museums, travel and technical facilities available today. At the same time we should not reduce early scholars to 'textbook cardboard' by looking only at the origins of ideas we still consider important, and ignoring the wider setting in which they were formulated. 1.1.1 Archaeology and antiquarianism, prehistory and history

Homer, N.Y., briefly attended Geneva (now Hobart) College, grad. Yale, 1853. He studied in France and Germany, served (1854–55) as attach© in St. Petersburg, and toured Europe. While teaching history (1857–63) at the Univ. of Michigan, he developed the idea of a university detached from all sects and parties and free to pursue truth without deference to dogma. After his father died (1860) he returned (1863) to New York a comparatively rich man. He sat (1864–67) in the New York state senate and was chairman of the education committee, which dealt with the founding of a land-grant college. With the financial aid of a fellow senator, Ezra Cornell , the land grant was made available for the institution that became Cornell Univ. White, as first president (1867–85), expanded the institution to teach not only agriculture and mechanical arts but also other fields of knowledge. He was one of the first educators to use the system of free elective studies. As Cornell was nonsectarian, the charge of godlessness was made against it. White, a practicing Episcopalian, maintained that freedom was beneficial to religion and wrote his History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (1896) and Seven Great Statesmen in the Warfare of Humanity with Unreason (1910) to develop his concept of free inquiry. Later White was minister to Germany (1879–81) and to Russia (1892–94). He was also ambassador to Germany (1897–1902) and was chairman of the American delegation to the First Hague Conference (1899). He persuaded Andrew Carnegie to build the Palace of Justice to house the Hague Tribunal.
