Complexity Thesis, A New Insight in Evolution-Creation Debate
By Stephen C.Y. Liu
Lately, historians in both American and British universities have re-evaluated the conflict thesis in light of historical context. They realized the epistemological and methodological issues as well as the ethics and social power prevailing in time. Such historiographic studies require careful delineation of social and political settings. Studies yielded altogether different conclusions about science and religion (Christianity) and their relationships. A complexity thesis as a new paradigm was proposed and called for.
The second book entitled in Science and Religion: A Historical Introduction was made available to the public in 2002, 389 pages, by Johns Hopkins Univ. Press, with 28 contributors.
An Encyclopedia covers 103 chapters under 10 Parts, in 586 pages. Part I. The Relationship of Science and Religion: covers 1. The historiography of science and religion, 2. The Conflict of Science and Religion, 3. The demarcation of science and religion, 4. Epistemology, 5. Causation, 6. Views of nature, 7. God, nature and science, 8, Varieties of providentialism, 9. Natural theology, 10. The design argument. 11. Miracles, 12. Theology, 13. Genesis and science, and 14. Nineteenth-century biblical criticism. Part II. Biographical studies, III. Intellectual Foundations and philosophical backgrounds, IV. Specific religious traditions and chronological periods, V. Astronomy and cosmology. VI Physical sciences, VII Earth Sciences, VIII Biological Sciences, IX. Medicine and psychology and X. The occult sciences. The scope and the breadth of coverage are indeed very impressive.

ANNALES EDITIONS NET ERRORS PUBLISHED ERRORS ... DR. ANDREW D. WHITE The age of the world Modern writers often, unfairly, single out Archbishop James Ussher as the creator of a chronology that dates creation some 4000 years BCE . But he was neither alone nor first. From St. Jerome to Sir J.G. Wilkinson, such a recent creation date was widely accepted in Western thought. Archbishop Ussher's chronology is also widely misquoted In 1642, Dr. John Lightfoot wrote that man was created at 9:00 a.m., and in 1644, he wrote that the world was created on Sunday, September 12, 3928. In 1650, the Irish Archbishop, James Ussher, published his computations that the world was created on Sunday, October 23rd, 4004, beginning at sunset of the 22nd. In the following excerpt, Andrew D. White doesn't misquote Ussher, but he does completely misrepresent John Lightfoot In 1896, Andrew D. White published a detailed history of the conflict between science and theology , from which these notes are drawn. Suffice it here that the general conclusion arrived at by an overwhelming majority of the most competent students of the biblical accounts was that the date of creation was, in round numbers, four thousand years before our era; and in the seventeenth century, in his great work, Dr. John Lightfoot, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and one of the most eminent Hebrew scholars of his time, declared, as the result of his most profound and exhaustive study of the Scriptures, that "heaven and earth, centre and circumference, were created all together, in the same instant, and clouds full of water," and that "this work took place and man was created by the Trinity on October 23, 4004

Differences between science and religion:
Scientific findings and religious beliefs are normally quite separate: Science deals with the study of nature, its forces, processes and development. It is based on the analysis of evidence. It assumes, as a working hypothesis, that processes and events happen due to natural causes, not through divine intervention. It rarely intrudes in matters of morality, the existence and nature of deity, spirituality, etc. Religion deals with matters of faith. Its main basis is often revelation from a deity either orally transmitted from generation to generation, recorded in a sacred text, or revealed to individuals through prayer . Most faith groups teach of the existence of one or more deities who created the universe, and continue to play a major role in managing it sometimes bypassing the laws of nature to create miracles. A main function of religion is to teach moral principles, mankind's relationship to the god(s) or goddess(es), behavior towards other humans, spiritual matters, etc. The main battles between religion and science are in areas in which they overlap. Here, both often hold conflicting positions.

"RETRO-PROGRESSING"
Ariel A. Roth
Origins EDITORIAL As one browses through the history section of a library, one of the volumes that is likely to catch one's attention is The Discoverers by Daniel Boorstin. It is an impressive, 700-page volume. Published in 1983, it chronicles in a semi-popular style selected aspects of man's discoveries. Two chapters entitled "The Prison of Christian Dogma" and "A Flat Earth Returns" deal with the outlandish concept of an earth that is flat instead of spherical.
Boorstin has impressive academic credentials from Harvard and Yale, and has held prestigious positions such as the Librarian of Congress, Director of the National Museum of History and Technology, and Senior Historian of the Smithsonian Institution. In The Discoverers he reflects the popular view that the ancient Greeks, including Aristotle and Plato, believed Earth to be a sphere; however, after the rise of Christianity a period of "scholarly amnesia" set in which lasted from around 300 to 1300 A.D. During this time, according to Boorstin, "Christian faith and dogma replaced the useful [spherical] image of the world that had been so slowly, so painfully, and so scrupulously drawn by ancient geographers." The "spherical" view was replaced by the concept of a flat earth, which Boorstin characterizes as "pious caricatures." Boorstin bolsters his case by mentioning a couple of minor writers — Lactantius and Cosmas — who believed in a flat earth and lived during this "dark age." He also implicates the powerful authority of St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), who "heartily agreed" that antipodes "could not exist."

Stephen Jay Gould ~ Rocks of Ages ~ chap. 3 Chap. 3 ~ Historical Reasons for Conflict John William Draper - History of the Conflict between Religion and Science Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) - A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom Draper: "The history of science is . . . A narrative of the conflict of two contending powers, the expansive force of the human intellect . . . And the compressing arising from traditionary [sic] faith. . . . Faith is in its nature unchangeable, stationary; Science is in its nature progressive . . ." (quoted on 118). Draper was especially hostile to Catholicism: "Roman Christianity and Science are recognized by their respective adherents as being absolutely incompatible; they cannot exist together; one must yield to the other . . ." (quoted on 119) Draper presents the flat-earth theory as an example of an absurd position defended by "Roman Christianity." War Between the States and Reconstruction
1850 to 1870
The American Civil War, along with the Napoleonic Wars and WW2, is a contender for Most-Written War. Considering that it was much shorter than the Napoleonic period, and fought in only part of one continent by two halves of a not-over-populous country, we think that the War Between the States wins. Naturally, this bibliography is not exhaustive, does not dent the surface, indeed is hardly a fingerprint on the surface. If you wish to write about specific battles in detail, in homage to Killer Angels , you are cordially invited to become a Civil War historian. If you want details of everyday life for non-battle stories, you will find a good guide below. Note how many period sources are available in reprint, especially for the re-enactor. This is a period when newspapers and magazines of the period can give you a lot of background detail, like how people of education spoke, and how dialect sounded to them. These periodicals can always be obtained on microfilm. We begin this period in the long tense decade during which the war nearly broke out several times.
