    Fiat Money Inflation in France
Fiat Money Inflation in France is a classic account of how deficit spending and fiat money led to ruinous runaway inflation and tyranny during the French Revolution. Written as a lesson and a warning for his contemporaries (in 1876 the United States was still on a paper money standard, an inheritance from the Civil War), White's examination is even more pointed today. The History of the Warfare of Science With Theology in Christendom
This extraordinary and scarce work by Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918), a professor and co-founder of Cornell University, is a unique study of the progress of humankind under two duelling forces: theology and science. White traces the evolution of human thought through a series of contrasts of ancient and modern theories of the world to show the impact of scientific research on the outmoded attitude of biblical literalism. Taking in an enormous range of subjects - including geography, astronomy, geology, chemistry, physics, medicine, psychology and economics - White illustrates the victory of empiricism over superstition, of scientific method and reason over fundamentalism. White's aim was to show that the Church's attacks on scientific progress resulted in "the direst evils both to religion and to science" and, more broadly, his study points up the dangers inherent in the religious control of higher education (at a time when nearly all universities in the USA and Europe were still under ecclesiastical control). Cornell University was established on the principle that education should not be under the control of political parties or religious sects - an idea greeted at the time with hostile accusations of Darwinism and atheism. But White was in fact deeply religious and his hope was to strengthen and purify theology by eliminating its antiscientific concerns. This excellent treatise finds special relevance today when academic freedom is once again under pressure from political and religious groups. It should now find a place in the libraries of all theologians, philosophers and historians.

Many footnotes have not yet been converted to HTML and are noted by brackets in the text containing a number (ex. - [145]). The number indicates the page in the written book the footnote can be found on.
    Introduction
My book is ready for the printer, and as I begin this preface my eye lights upon the crowd of Russian peasants at work on the Neva under my windows. With pick and shovel they are letting the rays of the April sun into the great ice barrier which binds together the modern quays and the old granite fortress where lie the bones of the Romanoff Czars.

White (1832-1918) Andrew Dickson White was an American educator and diplomat who was the founder and first president of Cornell University. Frustrated with American universities such as Yale, White wished to found a school more similar to the European university, with its freedom and breadth of learning. He convinced Ezra Cornell to endow the "People's College" in Ithaca, of which White became president. In 1892 President Harrison made him minister to Russia. Then President McKinley appointed him minister to Germany, during which time his chief accomplishment was the creation of a court of arbitration at the Hague Conference (1899).
