WHO: PHILLIS WHEATLEY She was kidnapped from Africa at age seven and sold at a slave auction to a Boston family who treated her as a family member. She quickly learned English, then Greek and Latin and came to know the Bible well. Her poem on the death of the Reverend George Whitefield brought her fame and an invitation from the Countess Selina of Huntington to come to London for assistance in publishing her poems. Her book of poems, "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral" was published in 1773. It was the first volume of poetry to be published by an African American. Phillis received her freedom and married in 1778, but despite her skills, was unable to support her family. She died at the young age of 31.

c. 1753 - 1784 By Patricia Chadwick patti@historyswomen.com
Phillis Wheatley was a highly educated woman and a gifted poet of the late eighteenth century. While it was unusual for woman of that era to be highly educated, it was almost unheard of for a slave to be able to read and write. Regardless, Phillis Wheatley was a slave
girl whose education helped to her to become a recognized and published poet in the late 1700s.

Phillis Wheatley
c. 1753 - 1784
Biography Born in Africa, probably in present-day Senegal or Gambia, Phillis Wheatley was brought to Boston when she was around eight years old to be a companion for Susannah Wheatley, the wife of a wealthy tailor. Mrs. Wheatley, part of an enlightened group of Boston Christians who believed that slavery could not be tolerated in Christian households, recognized Phillis's intelligence and saw that she was taught to read and write; Phillis studied the Bible, read Latin poets, and was influenced by Milton, Pope, and Gray. She became well known for her poem eulogizing the Reverend George Whitfield, and when she was nineteen or twenty she traveled to England, accompanied by the Wheatleys' son, with a manuscript of her work. Her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773) inaugurated the black American literary tradition. A group of eighteen prominent citizens of Boston, including the state governor and John Hancock, asserted that Wheatley had composed the poems, although "under the Disadvantage of serving as a Slave in a Family in this Town." A second volume was proposed but never published, and most of the poems and letters have been lost. Explorations Though originally published in 1773, Wheatley's

PRENTICE HALL LITERATURE: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes
Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley was the first African American writer of lasting importance in America. She was considered an intellectual phenomenon in the Boston and London of her. While she is best known for her Christian writings, she also wrote poems about American patriotism, imagination, slavery, and ancient culture. It was highly unusual for a slave to be an accomplished scholar and, indeed, for any woman in Colonial times to read Latin was noteworthy. Wheatley was not only well educated, but also a gifted poet. Her volume of poetry, published in London in 1773, was most likely the first book published by an African American. Wheatley's wife, Susanna, soon recognized the child's intelligence and under her guidance taught the child English, Greek, Latin, the Bible, history, and literature. Four years after her arrival, Phillis Wheatley was well on her way to becoming a writer. When Wheatley sought a publisher, her literary accomplishments were so astonishing that some doubted their authenticity. In 1772, called before a group of illustrious Bostonians, Wheatley had to prove her authorship. The examiners at the Boston courthouse included Thomas Hutchinson, governor of the colony, John Hancock, who later signed the Declaration of Independence, and Samuel Mather, Congregational Minister and son of Cotton Mather. In all, 18 members wrote a letter attesting to the truth of Phillis Wheatley's claim. With the committee's letter attesting to her authorship, new publishing opportunities arose. In 1773, Wheatley's most significant work was published in London, due largely to the help of the Countess of Huntingdon and Susanna Wheatley.
