How to cook a whale found dead.
This is my 1995 translation of the George Hunt 1914 translation of a old Kwakuitl receipe given by Elie Hunt in the Kwakuitl language. Click herefor a text transcript of the George Hunt translation . A brief biograpy and history of the recipe collection is here. Most importantly, you cannot eat it all by yourself! So the first step is to call for a party and invite all your friends, relatives, and local dignitaries. A special occasion, like the finding of a whale, calls for the use of ceremonial names. Though a hunter, a man, has found the whale, preparing food is women's work, and therefore the daughter of the hunter has the rights to prepare the whale. She is given the ceremonial name, Place-of-cutting-Blubber. Note that it is the daughter who has the rights, not the wife(s), due to the family rights in a matrilineal society. Once everybody is ready, you bring tools, and the hunter who found the whale leads everybody in their canoes to the spot where he found it. The father of the hunter has the honor of speaking for the daughter of the hunter to "make a toast" for the occasion. It is customary to first declare how wonderful the whale is, being full of delicious blubber, etc.. Then you should give the choicest piece (the dorsal fin) to the ranking dignitary, who is typically the chief of the village. Everybody else gets an equal size piece of the whale according to the order of their rank. The first piece starts at the whale neck, and they work from the top down and from the head to the tail. Generally the pieces are cut about a fathom (6 feet) in width. After the ceremonial pieces are given out, the women go to work to gather the remaining fat from the whale. The last step is cut off a piece of the tale of the whale.

Articles Biologists Looking at Killer Whale Attacks October 4 2003 Biologists don't know whether attacks by killer whales on gray whales are becoming more frequent because of changes in the Bering Sea ecosystem. Recently, a gray whale with bite marks on its flippers and flukes and chunks of flesh ripped away washed up on a Barrow beach. The evidence is consistent with attacks witnessed for decades from the Arctic to Baja California when a pod of killer whales takes on a single gray. "They rip 'em up pretty good," Craig George, a biologist with the North Slope Borough, told The Anchorage Daily News. Residents of False Pass report watching killer whales grabbing gray whales by the snout and tail while others leap onto their backs, perhaps to drown or tire their prey. Off St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, whalers say, orcas repeatedly ram gray whales, then start tearing flesh. The Barrow whale was thought to be a bowhead as it drifted toward town. When it washed up on a beach Sept. 27, it was identified by its short snout and white baleen as a gray whale, George said. A juvenile female showed the classic signs of an orca attack, said George. The tail flukes and dorsal ridge had bite marks, and the tongue, lips and half its jaw were torn free, he said. The rest of the body was essentially untouched.

Senator Lieberman made no reference this week to the brewing scandal about the fact that he may already BE Vice President owing to an accident of Texas geography. Since he is a sort of 4th dimensional Veep anyway, this might put Lieberman back in the running after all, considering the advantage to already being, sort of, elected. I got an e-mail postcard in Spanish from Hector Elizondo, Being elected hardly matters anymore, since science has learned to make nanotransistors out of DNA. Off shore of St. George in the Bay of Fundy is a place where strong tides and unusual bottom topography combine with cold, nutrient rich water to produce conditions ideal for juvenile herring, krill and copepods. For hungry whales its a place where dreams come true. Join us whale watching, particularly for the Northern Right Whale. We'll leave Back Bay Harbor passing through the most spectacular scenery in New Brunswick on our way to visit the most extraordinary creatures on earth, the GREAT WHALES! Northern Right Whale
The Northern Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is the world's most endangered large whale. Originally named because they were the 'right' whales to catch, these whales were easy to approach, floated when dead, contained valuable oil and baleen, and found close to shore so they were easy to kill. Their coastal habitat now harbors new threats: Busy shipping lanes bisect the area and fishing activity is intense. For northern right whales today, collisions with vessels and entanglements in fishing gear are every-day hazards. This winter, only three mother-calf pairs were observed in their calving grounds, an unusually low number.

George Orwell: ' Inside the Whale

W hen one says that a writer is fashionable one practically always means that he is admired by people under thirty. At the beginning of the period I am speaking of, the years during and immediately after the war, the writer who had the deepest hold upon the thinking young was almost certainly Housman. Among people who were adolescent in the years 1910-25, Housman had an influence which was fiBnormous and is now not at all easy to understand. In 1920, when I was about seventeen, I probably knew the whole of the Shropshire Lad by heart. I wonder how much impression the Shropshire Lad With rue my heart is laden

And many a lightfoot lad. By brooks too broad for leaping

The roselipt girls arc sleeping
