STANLEY JOHN WEYMAN "Prince of Romance" Admired by renowned authors such as Stevenson, Wilde, and Rafael Sabatini, Stanley John Weyman is today a forgotten literary giant of the late 19th century. While for years his best-selling historical romances enchanted thousands of readers, today his books are mostly neglected. Stanley Weyman (pronounced Wyman) was the second of three sons born to solicitor Thomas Weyman and his wife Mary Maria Black on August 7, 1855, at 54 Broad Street, Ludlow, Shropshire.  He attended King Edward VI Grammar School, Shrewsbury School (after age 16) and obtained a second class degree in Modern History at Christ Church, Oxford in 1877.  As History Master at King's School, Chester, he served under his future brother-in-law, Rev'd. George Preston. In Ludlow in 1879 he read for the Bar and was called in 1881, to begin a disappointing law career with Weyman, Weyman and Weyman, the family law firm.  He has been described as nervous, shy, short in height and a poor cross-examiner and was said to have angered a judge because of these shortcomings.  It is to our blessing that Weyman's law career was unsatisfactory.  As a result, he was able to devote his ample spare time to writing.  James Payn, editor of Cornhill Magazine , encouraged him to tackle larger literary works.

Cornhill Magazine editor James Payn convinced him to undertake fiction. Weyman began publishing in 1883 with his short "The Story of a Courtship" for The English Illustrated Magazine, But not until his first novel The House of the Wolf, set in 16th Century France, was he catapulted to fame in 1890. Wolf after serialization had a book edition only at the insistence of another early supporter, Andrew Lang, who persuaded Longmans Green of the author's excellence. From 1890 onward, he was the From the Memoirs of a Minister of France A Gentleman of France Under the Red Robe The Red Cockade (1895) are all but without parallel in excellence. Swashbuckler collector Jesse Knight has written, "Weymen really is a brilliant historical novelist who has been unjustly neglected." And I must say I am truly amazed that he is not to this day a household name with one or two of his books as widely known as one or two of Stevenson's. He was one of only two authors Rafael Sabatini explicitly claimed to have been an influence on his work; the other was mystic historical novelist Mary Johnston. Knight says, "Sabatini spoke highly of the older novelist, maintaining vigoriously that Weymen had advanced the field of historical fiction writing." The New Rector Starvecrow Farm Ovington Bank Shrewsbury Even apart from collectors of swashbuckling historicals, who tend to place him foremost of all such writers, there does seem to be a small budding revival of interest in Weyman. His admirer George MacDonald Fraser edited a collection called

Présentation. Oeuvres en français (et où les trouver). Bibliographie critique. Quelques liens. ... Me contacter. Après des études sans grand relief (« I was a bad classical scholar, and had no taste for mathematics », entretien paru dans

abin, Monsieur . Monsieur Sabin was created by E. Phillips Oppenheim and appeared in Mysterious Mister Sabin (1898) and The Yellow Ribbon (1903). Oppenheim (1866-1946) was an English author who wrote 116 novels and 39 short story collections, most about mystery, crime, and international intrigue; although extremely popular during his lifetime–he was called "the Prince of Storytellers"–his output is mediocre, and in personality Oppenheim was vile. Mysterious Mr. Sabin So Sabin tries to get the information from Lord Deringham. He places one of his agents, an adventuress, in Lord Deringham’s service as a secretary, but Lord Deringham comes to suspect her and has her fired. Mr. Sabin then travels to England and begins trying to find another way to get at Deringham’s work. He takes with him Princess Helene, who poses as his niece and who accompanies him not through any great affection for him but because, as a French patriot, she agrees with his aims. This brings Sabin and Helene into contact with Wolfenden, Deringham’s son and the putative hero of Mysterious Mr. Sabin
