Stanley Weyman
Profile
Stanley John Weyman was born at 54 Broad Street, Ludlow , Shropshire, the son of a solicitor and educated at Ludlow Grammar School, Shrewsbury School and Christ Church College, Oxford. He began writing in a minor way while at Oxford, where he read history, and increased his output in the following years with articles for The Cornhill magazine . He in fact spent ten years as a barrister before turning to a literary career full time, due largely to the influence of the magazine's editor. Weyman travelled abroad and his experiences and observations provided him with much of the background for the historical stories and romances for which he became well known. On one occasion he was arrested under suspicion of being a spy in the south of France and was only released after the intervention of the British Ambassador. His novels include Memoirs of a minister of France The red cockade The long night The wild geese (1908) as well as many short stories.

Preface
Living in the United States, I have held more US first editions of Stanley Weyman than British. I've been adding to this bibliography information about the illustrated editions as this becomes known to me; but this is thus far incomplete. The bibliography will be fleshed out as more comes to me from finding more specimens, or from what collectors of Weyman can fill in for me I would welcome information based on books on your shelves! Jim Hawkins, le héros de Treasure Island Présentation générale. Liste des principaux auteurs britanniques. Où trouver des romans d'aventures britanniques? Auteurs d'autres pays. ...

WALTARI, MIKA TOIMI (1908-1979) (Grolier; JAAKKO A. AHOKAS) Finland's most frequently translated writer, Mika Toimi Waltari, b. Sept. 19, 1908, d. Aug. 26, 1979, is best known for his historical novel The Egyptian (1945; Eng. trans., 1949; film, 1954), set during the reign of the pharaoh Akhenaten, an early believer in monotheism who came into conflict with an entrenched theocracy. Waltari's nonhistorical fiction, notably A Nail Merchant at Nightfall (1949; Eng. trans., 1954), The Tongue of Fire (1958; Eng. trans., 1959), and The Secret of the Kingdom (1959; Eng. trans., 1960), also deals with religion, as well as with frustrated relations between the sexes. Anna-Elisa Liinamo sent this information: Being a Finn and as such a huge fan of Mika Waltari, I can't but shiver when reading the info on Waltari on a HISTORICAL fiction list... OK, of course "The Egyptian" (Sinuhe egyptilainen) is there, but where are the rest My all-time-favourite is "The Dark Angel" (Johannes Angelos), that is set on last days of Constantinople during Turkish conquest in 1452. Good are also "The Etruscan" (Turms kuolematon), set in Mediterranean area during the heyday of Etruscans some 500 B.C.; the duo "The Adventurer" and "The Wanderer" (Mikael Karvajalka and Mikael Hakim), starting in Finland around mid-1500s , going through Paris, Germany and Rome and ending in Istanbul during Soleiman the Great; and and the duo "The Secret of the Kingdom" and "The Roman" (Valtakunnan salaisuus and Ihmiskunnan viholliset), the first set in Palestine in spring 30 A.D. and the latter in Rome 50-70 A.D., telling together the story of early Christianity.

"Where are those quotes in Dorothy Dunnett's books from?"
"_Game of Kings_ also has a brief quote from a chess book at the beginning of each chapter. They are in what I take to be ~16th century English so I found them rather hard to decipher but rewarding to try. I've always wondered whether these quotes were made up or taken from a real book or books. I have great respect for DD's work and believe the quotes are real. But can anyone set my niggling doubts at rest?" - Paul Hollander. "They're from Caxton's book on chess." - Jo Beverley. Ellen Wertheimer suggests "Dorothy Dunnett Companion":
"There is a book newly out, called the Dorothy Dunnett Companion, which is available from James Thin Ltd. in Scotland (also on the Internet under James Thin Ltd.) This book has all the quotations in all of the Lymond books and in the first five Niccolo books, with sources for all of them and for the various references in those eleven books."
