, English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, famous for his works of science fiction. Wells's best-known books are The Time Machine The Invisible Man (1897), and The War Of The Worlds
H.G. Wells was born on September 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent. His father was a shopkeeper and a professional cricketer, and his mother served from time to time as a housekeeper at the nearby estate of Uppark. His father's business failed and Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper, spending the years between 1880 and 1883 in Windsor and Southsea. Later he recorded these years in Kipps
In 1883 Wells became a teacher-pupil at Midhurst Grammar School. He obtained a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London and studied biology under T.H. Huxley. However, his interest faltered and in 1887 he left without a degree. He taught in private schools for four years, not taking his B.S. degree until 1890. Next year he settled in London, married his cousin Isabel and continued his career as a teacher in a correspondence college. From 1893 Wells became a full-time writer. After some years Wells left Isabel for one of his brightest students, Amy Catherine, whom he married in 1895.

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) a Brief Biography Sometimes called the father of modern science fiction, H.G. Wells was born on September 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent, England. His father, a professional cricket player and shopkeeper, and his mother, a former lady's maid, raised Wells with the idea that he would find a place in the work world that they were accustomed. He aspired to a different place in society. When he was thirteen, he left school to become a draper's apprentice, a job his family expected would be proper for a boy of his station. The work repelled him, however. He worked briefly in a drugstore, returned for a stint as a draper's assistant, then finally found a job as a teacher's assistant in a grammar school. Education and academia suited him well. In 1884 he entered college with a scholarship to study biology. He was able to study under one of the great biology teachers of the time, Thomas Henry Huxley, and Wells graduated in 1888. The writings of Jules Verne undoubtably influenced Wells, and he wrote his first novel, The Time Machine , partly in response to this new kind of literature that Verne produced. The story appeared in various forms in magazines from 1888 to 1894 and was released in its current form in 1895. The book was successful, and Wells did not need to teach or worry about money from that time on.

All's 'Wells' that ends 'Welles'?
H.G. Wells (1866-1946) wrote some of the most intriguing literature of his time and took writing seriously: "Some passages of mine . . . I rewrote a dozen times . . . ." His stories challenged readers' beliefs in what their world was and what it would become. One of his most famous works, "War of the Worlds," was used by Orson Welles for the Mercury Theater radio broadcast for Halloween 1938. The broadcast literally scared the beejeezus out of many Americans, even driving a few to suicide. As the example above illustrates, the broadcast made headlines across the world. If you'd like to know more about either H.G. Wells or Orson Welles , just click on their names (after, of course, you 've completed today's assignments). H.G. Wells
H.G Wells (1866-1946) is best known as the author of 'scientific romances' such as The Time Machine The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man , but in a lifetime of eighty years he proved himself to be an accomplished and prolific author, journalist, sociologist, popular historian and social prophet. Born into a shop-keeping family, with a mother who worked as a housekeeper, Wells escaped from his first career as a draper's assistant to study Biology at the Normal School of Science in London. Working as a teacher of science his financial circumstances led him towards writing, achieving critical and financial success with The Time Machine in 1895, and followed up by the other popular scientific romances in the 1890s. In the early years of the twentieth century Wells turned towards more realistic forms of novel -writing, in works such as Kipps The History of Mr Polly Tono Bungay (1909) and Ann Veronica (1909). After the First World War Wells's power as a novelist deteriorated, but his reputation was restored with popular works of history such as The Outline of History (1920) and A Short History of the World (1922), acquiring the status of popular educator and self-made intellectual. His final work

H. G. Wellls Wells, H(erbert) G(eorge) (1866-1946), English author, broadcaster, political philosopher and public figure, wrote and spoke on a wide range of subjects but is, perhaps, most famous for his science-fantasy novels with their prophetic depictions of the triumphs of technology as well as the horrors of 20th-century warfare. Wells was born September 21, 1866, in Bromley, (an outer London borough), and educated at the Normal School of Science in London, to which he won a scholarship. He worked as a draper's apprentice, bookkeeper, tutor, and journalist until 1895, when he became a full-time writer. Wells's 10-year relationship with Rebecca West produced a son, Anthony West, in 1914. Throughout his long life Wells was deeply concerned with and wrote voluminously about the survival of contemporary society. For a time he was a member of the Fabian Society . He envisioned a utopia in which the vast and frightening material forces available to modern men and women would be rationally controlled for progress and for the equal good of all. Some critics have said his later works were increasingly pessimistic and that the author was in despair at the end of his life. '42 to '44 (1944) castigated most world leaders of the period; Mind at the End of Its Tether (1945) expressed the author's doubts about the ability of humankind to survive. Not all commentators concur with this view (see the excellent 'H.G.: The History of Mr Wells', by Michael Foot). Wells also wrote An Experiment in Autobiography (1934). He died August 13, 1946, in London.
