    Carolyn Reading Hammer
Carolyn Reading Hammer, scion of pioneer families of the Bluegrass of Kentucky, was educated at Transylvania College in Lexington and completed a graduate degree in Library Science at Columbia University . It was while she was in New York in the early '30s that she became interested in printing. Professor Shaver's course The History of the Book at Columbia introduced her to the realm of hand press printing and the private press. After her graduation from Columbia in the midst of the Great Depression, Carolyn found a volunteer position at The Library of Congress . Despite offering her services gratis , she was given a stipend of $10 each month. She was soon hired by the Catalogue Department. After two years, Carolyn decided to go to a Kentucky mountain school as its librarian. She worked there as librarian and teacher for three years before moving to Frankfort, Kentucky, as a Reference Librarian in the Kentucky Library Extension Division, and finally, in 1940, to the Margaret I. King Library
