Welcome to John Webster's Site: John Webster ( c. c.
(b. c c. 1632), English dramatist whose The White Devil (c. 1609-c. 1612) and The Duchess of Malfi c. 1612/13, published 1623) are generally regarded as the paramount 17th-century English tragedies apart from those of Shakespeare.
Little is known of Webster's life. His preface to Monuments of Honor , his Lord Mayor's Show for 1624, says he was born a freeman of the Merchant Taylors' Company. He was probably a coachmaker, and possibly he was an actor. Apart from his two major plays and The Devils Law-Case c . 1620; published 1623), his dramatic work consists of collaborations (not all extant) with leading writers. With Thomas Dekker, his main collaborator, he wrote Westward Ho (1604) and Northward Ho (1605), both of which were published in 1607. He is also believed to have worked to varying degrees with William Rowley, Thomas Middleton, John Fletcher, John Ford, and perhaps Philip Massinger. Eight extant plays and some nondramatic verse and prose are wholly or partly his; the most standard edition is The Complete Works of John Webster , ed. by F.L. Lucas, 4 vol. (1927).

Thomas Middleton.
From Chris Cleary's Middleton site The Jacobean periodfrom the accession of James I in 1603 was rich in satire and tragedy, perhaps partly because of the change of mood that came with the death of Elizabeth. This page offers brief (and inevitably inadequate) comments on some of the major figures. Click to read more about each writer: [Notes]
John Webster (c. 1580-1638)
Webster is in many ways the most Shakespearean of the later tragedians, though in one way he was utterly unlike himhe worked very slowly on his plays, compiling useful sayings from his reading, keeping them in a "commonplace book," and using them in his plays as he found occasion. His two great tragedies, The White Devil, and The Duchess of Malfi, are based on sensational events in recent Italian history; they are notable for their striking, and sympathetic, portrayal of their tragic heroines.

During the 1580's a group of men formed a group called "The University Wits." These were men who were interested in writing for the public stage. The "wits" included Thomas Kyd, Christopher Marlowe, John Lyly, and Robert Greene. Thomas Kyd wrote The Spanish Tragedy, the most popular play of the 16th century. He constructed a well-planned plot which made for a very interesting play. The Cambridge-educated Christopher Marlowe was important in the development of chronicle plays such as Edward II . He also wrote the well-known play Doctor Faustus. John Lyly was another member of the University Wits who wrote primarily pastoral comedies in which he used mythology along with English subjects.
