The Milky Way Galaxy
A spiral galaxy , type Sbc, centered in Sagittarius The Milky Way is the galaxy which is the home of our Solar System together with at least 200 billion other stars (more recent estimates have given numbers around 400 billion) and their planets, and thousands of clusters and nebulae , including at least almost all objects of Messier's catalog which are not galaxies on their own (one might consider two globular clusters as possible exceptions, as probably they are just being, or have recently been, incorporated or imported into our Galaxy from dwarf galaxies which are currently in close encounters with the Milky Way: from SagDEG , and possibly from the Canis Major Dwarf ). See our Messier Objects in the Milky Way page , where details are given for each object to which part of our Galaxy it is related. All the objects in the Milky Way Galaxy orbit their common center of mass, called the Galactic Center (see below). As a galaxy, the Milky Way is actually a giant, as its mass is probably between 750 billion and one trillion solar masses, and its diameter is about 100,000 light years. Radio astronomial investigations of the distribution of hydrogen clouds have revealed that the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb or Sc. Therefore, out galaxy has both a pronounced disk component exhibiting a spiral structure, and a prominent nuclear reagion which is part of a notable bulge/halo component. It is still not clear if it has a bar structure (so that it would be type SB) or not, but an increasing number of investigations has given some evidence for this, so that the Milky Way may look like

29. The Way Home
Mongoose reviews the film.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/way_home.html
The Way Home Korea is a really diverse place if one looks at it from the few movies from that country that make it here. They could not be a more diverse bunch. Chunhyang was a traditional costume drama, Nowhere to Hide and Shiri were violent, action movies, and now The Way Home is a emotional tear-jerker. It is the type of film that strives for cuteness, so much so that at times it seems emotionally manipulative. It is a pleasing film, but would be much better if it had much more originality, but it still doesn't mean that one cannot enjoy The Way Home. It has a simplistic yet universally appealing story, one that people everywhere can easily relate to. It its heart, it is a story about unconditional familial love. Sang-Woo (Yu Sueng-Ho), a young spoiled boy from the city, goes to live with his grandmother (Kim Eul-Bun). Sang-Woo is a child of the city. He loves hamburgers, Kentucky Fried Chicken, his portable game console, rollerblades, and everything else a little materialistic brat could love. His grandmother lives a life that is the antithesis of what he knows. There is little if no electricity, no restaurants, just a small house and lots of nothing. Naturally, Sang-Woo hates this and lashes out at his grandmother, who is mute. She is not deaf, which makes it all the worse when Sang-Woo verbally berates her.

GOING DOWN THE THIRD WAY IN POLITICS, MAYBE THE GARDEN PATH
Ted Honderich A piece that The Times Literary Supplement thought better of printing, maybe rightly. For my later and stronger view of the subject-matter, try After the Terror
The National Health Service hasn't been getting any better under the Blair government according to a lot of people, some still waiting on hospital trolleys. Also, the gap between the rich and poor widened in the government's first year according to the independent Rowntree Trust. Class sizes for children over eight have increased since the election. Then there's public transport with Blair say life on the capital's Northern Line. There are more facts like that, many about equality. Some say there hasn't been time for the father of our age to make a difference. There is another possibility. It is that he and his colleagues and supporting thinkers do not actually want rightly or wrongly to pay the prices of all those things. So they are not really for getting those things. At bottom, they don't really want to make a big difference. What really is the nature of their moral and political thinking and feeling? You do not get a literal, explicit and general answer from the daily speechifying under pressure. Or lovely pledges on television to spend billions, soon scaled down to aspirations as flat as The Dome. Or more metaphors from the Creative Department in the Labour Party. That's the flotsam and jetsum. What's the tide?

33. Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai
A review of the film by Mongoose.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/ghost_dog.html
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai In the world of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai , Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is a rotund assassin who follows the teachings of the Hagakure , the book detailing the ways of the samurai. Ghost Dog frequently works for an Italian mob family obsessed with rap and cartoons. Yes, this is a comedy, and yes, it is deftly funny. Ghost Dog is the new movie by independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, and there is really nothing else like it in release right now. It is a quirky mix of violence, humor, honor, and music, made in a way that asserts its independence while remaining accessible to the masses. Ghost Dog (Whitaker, Light It Up, Battlefield Earth ) carries out contracts for Louie (John Tormey, Safe Men, Joe Gould's Secret ), a member of the local Mafia. A hit for Louie goes awry, incurring the wrath of crime family head Ray Vargo (Henry Silva, Unconditional Love, The End of Violence ). Vargo orders a hit on Ghost Dog. Ghost Dog then proceeds to do the honorable thing; protect Louie and protect himself. The pace of the movie is slow, but the characters are so colorful and bizarre that the immersion in their world is quite enjoyable. Ghost Dog has no phone. He only communicates by carrier pigeon, making it extremely difficult for the mob to even locate him. In a way, both Ghost Dog and the Mafia are men lost in time. They each belong to a time that is past, and each is trying to live the way of life they feel is proper in this new and strange world.

If Going My Way , a delightful movie confection, were remade today, it would end up as a sticky Hallmark Hall of Fame thing. Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) is the new priest at the Church of St. Dominic in a working-class New York City neighborhood. He fails to make a good first impression with crusty old Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald), who doesn't cotton to O'Malley's golf playing, baseball game attending, or fishing. But O'Malley starts spiffing up the church and its neighborhood: dealing with the church mortgage, which is in arrears, straightening out the street gangs (not as tough as it sounds major gang activity runs to stealing turkeys off the butcher's cart), and getting the boys to help him start a choir. Romantic matches are made; neighborhood busybodies are appeased. Many songs are joyfully sung including "Swing on a Star" and "Ave Maria." O'Malley even arranges a big surprise for Fitzgibbon, who's homesick for Ireland.

Fact Sheet 035-01 (March 2001)
From Near to Far: Distance From Here to There: Determining Direction
A Word of Caution
For More Information Part of a 7.5-minute topographic map at 1:24,000 scale A topographic map tells you where things are and how to get to them, whether you're hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, or just interested in the world around you. These maps describe the shape of the land. They define and locate natural and manmade features like woodlands, waterways, important buildings, and bridges. They show the distance between any two places, and they also show the direction from one point to another. Distances and directions take a bit of figuring, but the topography and features of the land are easy to determine. The topography is shown by contours. These are imaginary lines that follow the ground surface at a constant elevation; they are usually printed in brown, in two thicknesses. The heavier lines are called index contours, and they are usually marked with numbers that give the height in feet or meters. The contour interval, a set difference in elevation between the brown lines, varies from map to map; its value is given in the margin of each map. Contour lines that are close together represent steep slopes. Natural and manmade features are represented by colored areas and by a set of standard symbols on all U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps. Woodlands, for instance, are shown in a green tint; waterways, in blue. Buildings may be shown on the map as black squares or outlines. Recent changes in an area may be shown by a purple overprint. a road may be printed in red or black solid or dashed lines, depending on its size and surface. A list of symbols is available from the
