Ian Maclaren
Novelist
"Ian Maclaren" was the pseudonym used for fiction writing by John Watson , who was born in Manningtree, Essex, on 3rd November 1850. The family moved to Perth in 1854, and Watson was educated at Edinburgh University and the Free Church of Scotland college in Edinburgh. Ordained as a Free Church minister, he spent some years in Logiealmond, Perthshire, and in Glasgow, before beginning a long career in Liverpool. He published a number of religious works under his own name, but as Ian Maclaren was a leading member of the Kailyard School of Scottish fiction which came into being towards the end of the nineteenth century. Maclaren's first work in this genre, Beside the bonnie brier bush (1894) takes its title from Burns : "There grows a bonnie brier-bush in our kail-yard. ..." Beside the bonnie brier bush is a collection of "idylls" or stories, set in the fictional village of Drumtochty. The village is thought to be based on Logiealmond, where Maclaren began his ministerial career, but the picture of rural life, in common with most Kailyard works owes more to nostalgia than to the reality of Maclaren's time, or perhaps of any time. The narrator, though he may be a returned exile, is an "outsider" by virtue of his education and experience, so that he is able to observe the simple Scots-speaking villagers from a somewhat patronising height. Church affairs are at the centre of Drumtochty life, and the climax of a story is often a pious deathbed scene, where a brilliant young man or a saintly veteran goes to his eternal reward.

    MACEDONIA
    CHURCH HISTORY
by William Archibald Touchton Tradition has it that Macedonia was organized as a Church in 1848, just 100 years ago (being read in 1948). Official records, however, reach back only to 1858. Were there records kept for the previous 10 years, they have long since disappeared.
During the first forty years her members met for worship in an old log building located on the west side of the Alapaha river near the old Lee bridge. It was here that the Rev. C. Howell, R. Friar, R.S. Harvey and other devoted "Men of God" preached to the Adams, Howells, Touchtons, Roberts, Fenders, Tomlinsons and others of the original settlers, inspiring them to seek the better way of life.
Macedonia was a pioneer's Church, its first members had but recently saw trouble with Billy Bowlegs and his Indian followers. Having just returned from driving the red men to their reservation in the Florida Everglades, they met to give thanks to God for their new freedom from the Indian threat, - and Macedonia was born.
Having looked to God for guidance in their lives, they soon realized the value of joining with their neighbors along each side of the river south to the Florida line in forming a unit of county government, and Echols County was born with the county seat at Troublesome, later known as Statenville, in 1958.

NOTE: Since the baptismal and marriage records for the Ponds Reformed Dutch Church in Oakland, Bergen County, NJ have been destroyed, any cemetery list involving this church is most beneficial. The following was a list done around 1909 and explains why some of the people in the cemetery do not have death dates. They were still living at the time of the transcription. My thanks goes to Ruth Romaine, historian of the Ponds Church, for supplying me with this list. Originally copied May 1909 by John Neafie and Wm. B. Van Alstyne. Liza Jane wife of Henry B.
