Z Robert Livingston Click on an image to view full-sized Robert Livingston LIVINGSTON, Robert, first ancestor of the family in America, born in Antrum, Scotland, 13 December, 1654; died in Albany, New York, 20 April, 1725. He was the son of John Livingston, a Scottish Presbyterian divine, born in 1603, who was banished in 1663 for non-conformity and went to Rotterdam, where he died in 1672. Among the early members of the family was Mary Livingston, who went to France with Mary Stuart as one of her maids of honor. Robert emigrated to Charlestown, Massachusetts, in April, 1673, settled in Albany, and as early as 1675 became secretary of the commissaries, which office he held until Albany became a city in 1686. Subsequently he continued to hold the similar office of town clerk until 1721. Mr. Livingston was a member of the colonial assembly from the city and county of Albany in 1711, and after 1716 was returned from his manor till 1725, becoming speaker in 1718. Robert's son

main page historic homes upcoming events gift shoppe ... contact us HISTORY OF THE LA GRANGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH La Grange, the most written about town of Fayette County, had everything going for it when the Presbyterian Church was formed there in 1834. It had the only bank in the county and the only newspaper and its citizens had ambitious plans for the first railroad - the La Grange to Memphis. Church Founder The Presbyterian Church was founded by Reverend Samuel McCulloch Williamson, a surprising fact since he was from an extensive and well-known Methodist family. In order of their service, some of the other men involved with the first church were Stephen K. Sneed, Richard Watkins, Reverend John H. Gray, Reverend John N. Waddel, Philip Doddridge Ewell, Robert H. Shepperd, Reverend Angus Johnson and Reverend William S. Cochrane. The deed for the church's first location has not been found. There were two known locations: Lot 102 and the southeast corner of Lot 11. HARD BLOWS IN THE 1840s Reverend Samuel M. Williamson: Founder, died at age 42 in 1846 and was buried in the La Grange Cemetery. He was born 1804 in Northampton County, North Carolina. He was married twice. His first wife was Mary R. Chapman, daughter of Robert H. Chapman, D.D. Dr. Alexander Augustus Campbell performed their marriage ceremony in Covington in 1832. Samuel M. Williamson, the second son of Benjamin and Mary (McCulloch) Williamson, was graduated from Yale in 1823, admitted to the bar in 1825 and moved to Tennessee and commenced practice with John Grundy. After entering the ministry, he supplied the Presbyterian Church in Memphis from November 1830 to November 1833 and was one of the most able ministers to preach in Memphis. He came to the Western District Presbytery from Shiloh Presbytery in 1831.

Thomas Cummings' Family Thomas and his family lived in Chippawa, Upper Canada. Chippawa is situated on the Niagara River upstream from the falls. Later generations spread throughout the Niagara district and later still, beyond. By that time Upper Canada had become the Province of Ontario. Thomas Cummings Thomas was born in Scotland 1758-60. He lived on a farm in Pappacunk, New York, working as the manager for owner John Burch. He served in the military in both New York and Upper Canada, 1779-1783. Thomas was designated as an United Empire Loyalist. As such, in 1783 he was granted 200 acres of land at the mouth of the Chippawa River on the north side. The district was called "H District" and it became Welland Co., Stamford Twp., Upper Canada. He is reckoned as the first settler at Chippawa. He married Jane Christie 13 Mar 1788. Children of Thomas and Jane: 11 James Cummings born in Chippawa 12 Apr 1789; 12 Jane Cummings born in Chippawa 24 Jul 1791. Thomas worked for the Commissary Department in New York and Upper Canada, 1794-1815. Thomas was elected Town Clerk of Chippawa, 7 Mar 1796. He continued in that office at least until 1801. Thomas also served as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas was a general merchant Chippawa at least from 1800 to 1823. In 1807, Thomas was appointed Trustee of the first public school board for the township of Willoughby. Thomas served as Garrison sergeant at Fort George beginning in November, 1812. He had also been described as Issuer, Provision Branch, Commissariat Dept., Fort George, Upper Canada. Thomas was appointed Trustee for the Episcopal church to be built at Chippawa. Stamford, 22nd June, 1821.

Carolyn Rowe's book is a prodigious work and contains the pedigrees of hundreds of the descendants of Robert and Matilda Carson McGough. Much of the information on this page is from her book. Most sources say that the name of Robert's wife was Sarah Matilda Carson McGough, but some sources say her name was Mary. In this page, I call her Matilda or Sarah Matilda. The family of Robert and Matilda Carson McGough sailed in 1773 from Newry, county Down, Northern Ireland, to Charleston, South Carolina, when their oldest son John was almost 12 years old, and their five younger children were 9, 7, 6, 5, and 3. They were part of a group of about 40 relatives and neighbors. Robert would have been 48 years old in 1773 when he migrated from Ireland with has family and neighbors. Dr Robert A. Hatch - University of Florida Agassiz, Jean Louis (1807-1873) , Swiss-American zoologist, studied philosophy and medicine. Agassiz was eventually associated with Cuvier and Humboldt at Paris (1831-32), later became professor of natural history at Neuchatel (1832-45) and professor of geology and zoology at Harvard (1847). Agassiz spent a good deal of time studying glacial formations and eventually proposed a 10-volume study of American natural history. Agassiz was a strong and consistent opponent of Darwin until his death. DSB Barrande, Joachim (1799-1883) , French geologist and paleontologist. Barrande studied and taught at the University of Padua and became an authority on Silurian formations. He was famous for his investigation of the Paleozoic fossils of Bohemia. Barrande published twenty-two volumes of his Systeme Silurian de la Boheme during his lifetime, a work that is still cited by paleontologists. Darwin spoke highly of 'his admirable labours on the development of Trilobites, and his most important work on his Lower or Primordial Zone'. The Frasers of Dell and their Connections with Early Frasers in Canada by Harry W. Duckworth [article from Canadian Explorer , September 1998 with updates] A mong the Frasers who were prominent in Canada in the first generation after the Conquest, the merchants known as Simon Fraser senior, and Simon Fraser junior, both of Quebec, have remained somewhat mysterious. Simon Fraser senior first appeared as a retail merchant at Quebec in the mid-1760s. Over the next thirty years or more, he quietly prospered at Quebec, making some of his money by trading fish to the West Indies and bringing rum back, and the rest of it through his retail business in British manufactured goods. Sometime late in the 1790s Simon Fraser senior retired to Scotland. He was still alive there in 1804. Simon Fraser junior is a more colourful figure. He first appears in the fall of 1774, when a ship on which he was travelling from Quebec to Dominica in the West Indies, the Lady Lovat, was wrecked on Anticosti Island in the Gulf of St Lawrence, and he and his companions spent an uncomfortable winter on that desolate shore. By fall 1775 he was a partner in an aggressive Quebec business called Shaw and Fraser, which made money selling rum to the British army during the American Revolution, but overextended itself and was driven into insolvency at the end of that War.

R. A. JEFFRESS R. A. JEFFRESS, of Colorado, one of the honored pioneers of Western Texas, whose labors have been of material benefit in the improvement of this section of the state, comes of English ancestry. His father was Colonel William C. Jeffress, Miss Bettie Clark of Prince Edward county, Virginia, in December, 1846. She died in 1852 leaving one child, R. A. Jeffress. His second marriage was to Miss Margaret Moseley of Charlotte county, Virginia, by whom he had two sons and two daughters, but one of the daughters died in infancy and the mother passed away in 1863. Colonel Jeffress[’s] last marriage was to Miss Sally Thornton, of Milton, North Carolina, in 1866. By this marriage there were three children, two sons, and a daughter. Colonel Jeffress was a tall, fine-looking man of unusually good address, was a fluent speaker, an entertaining conversationalist and a most companionable gentleman. He continued his residence in the county of his nativity until called to his final rest on the 22nd of August, 1895.
