Mentioned in "A Poet's Skull" (as "Rabelay"). "Age Comes to Rabelais." REH to The Eyrie, March 1932: "[Clark Ashton] Smith's sweep of imagination and fantasy is enthralling, but what captivates me most is the subtle, satiric humour that threads its delicate way through so much of his work a sly humour that equals the more subtle touches of Rabelais and Petronius." REH to H.P. Lovecraft, ca. Storm Kennedy
Created by Sax Rohmer (pseudonym of Arthur Sarsfield Ward, 1883-1959)
Attempt to cash in on P.I. craze, with P.I. STORM KENNEDY investigating murder. The usual Rohmer touches allegedly abound, including wild coincidences, various macabre and supernatural ramblings, unfortunate stereotypes and pure silliness. According to the dedication, Sax's wife Rose Elizabeth Rohmer helped write this. Sax Rohmer, of course, was best known for creating the evil Dr. Fu Manchu , first introduced in a short story in 1912, who went on to become one of the all-time great supervillians, and the personification of the Yellow Peril. His career lasted for decades and included appearances in short stories, novels, radio and film. Yet, despite his success, rohmer, thanks to some spectacularly bad investments and even worse management of his finances, lived in poverty most of his life. NOVELS

Arthur Sarsfield Ward (18831959) better known as Sax Rohmer gets mentionedfor his Fu Manchu novels. Dennis Wheatley (1897-1977) is also praised.

Sand Roughs No. 6 - Summer Solstice The Fantasy Book: An Illustrated History from Dracula to Tolkein Franz Rottensteiner Collier Books, 1978 The Fantasy Book is a very nice history of fantasy. It is gorgeously illustrated and entertainingly written. The author is a German citizen and he throws in some great information about European weird fiction writers that are probably unfamiliar to an American audience. Supernatural Horror in Literature Rottensteiner quibbles with this a bit but goes on to give a nice talk about the attraction of horror fiction to audiences of the past and why horror fiction remains popular today. The first chapter details the Gothic origins of the genre. The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (1717-1797) is considered the first weird novel. The Gothic novel was very popular and eventually became the subject of parody. Northanger Abbey (1818) is one famous parody. Next up was the oriental fantasy. William Beckford (1760-1844), a very wealthy but jaded fellow wrote the popular novel, Vathek It is about a very wealthy but jaded fellow who indulges his wickedness in adventure after adventure finally resulting in his heart being eternally circled by living fire.

Prolific English mystery writer, best known as the creator of the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu and his opponents Denis Nayland Smith, Dr. Petrie, (named after the Egyptologist Flinders Petrie), and the beautiful Kâramanéh, the target of Petrie's daydreams, whose "eyes held a challenge wholly Oriental in its appeal." In spite of Rohmer's popularity, his family lived in poverty for many years because of the bad deals he made with the publishers. "Imagine a person, tall, lean and feline, high shouldered, with a brow like Shakespeare and a face like Satan, a close-shaven skull, and long, magnetic eyes of the true cat-green. Invest him with all the cruel cunning of an entire Eastern race, accumulated in one giant intellect, with all the resources of science past and present, with all the resources, if you will, of a wealthy government - which, however, already has denied all knowledge of his existence. Imagine that awful being, and you have a mental picture of Dr Fu Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate in one man..."

E.g. how would you list Busta Rhymes? It is an artist name, but can be seen as an ordinary (well...) name too. If you suspect that the name contains a strange character, try to "search around" it.

Supernatural Horror: Authors and Themes Fritz Leiber's OUR LADY OF DARKNESS ANNOTATIONS Fritz Leiber began work on what was to become Our Lady of Darkness in 1974. In its first, shorter, form, it was completed in March 1975 and appeared in two parts as “The Pale Brown Thing” in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction (January-February 1977). The final novel version was published as a US hardcover by Putnams in 1977, with a US paperback and UK hardback and paperback editions following in 1978. Our Lady of Darkness won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1978. These annotations have been compiled by Ro Pardoe and John Howard, with additions from Frank Denton, Don Herron, Roger Johnson, Betty Nicholls, Jane Nicholls, Darroll Pardoe, Dennis Rickard, and Muriel Smith. The annotations were first published in 21 (1996). They have been slightly revised, and updated, by John Howard in 2003.
