Sax Rohmer

Sax Rohmer (1883-1959)
Sax Rohmer, aka British journalist Arthur Sarsfield Ward, invented literature's most devillish arch-fiend when he introduced the deliciously sinister Dr. Fu-Manchu in 1912. What's more, when nearing the age of 70 he even exposed our unsuspecting world to a female counterpart of the devil doctor. Sumuru appeared in 1950, and forever after scholars have debated which is the more tasteful title: The English edition "The Sins of Sumuru" or the American "Nude in Mink". You can't but admire a pensioner that can think up titles like that! Our own effort, the upcoming WHIO episode named "The Insidious Cheese" - although bold - somehow falls a little short. But in due time, we will get it right. Then it's our turn to autograph books wrapped in silk dressing robes, unlit pipes thrust firmly between our stiff upper lips! So there!
After being out of print for far too long, Fu-Manchu is now back. Here's the three first novels:
The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu

Ward, Arthur Henry Sarsfield (‘Sax Rohmer’) (1883-1959) Chambers’s Journal , earning his living from this parcel of activities between 1906-09. In 1905 Ward met a variety act juggler, Rose Elisabeth Knox (1886-1979), sister of the Crazy Gang comedian Teddy Knox, and they married in London on 14 January 1909. Moving on from just writing for the stage itself, Ward wrote Pause! (1910) a collection of stories in collaboration with Robey, and ghostwrote the autobiography of Little Titch (1911). Encouraged by Elizabeth, Ward published his first serial in Cassell’s Magazine in 1912, and also introduced his Sax Rohmer by-line. ‘The Sins of Severac Babylon’ (published in book form in 1914) was an anti-semitic fantasy starring a ‘Jewish Robin Hood’. More representative of what became a corpus of some 52 popular thrillers and story collections which grew out of his magazine serial writing oeuvre, were his Oriental fantasies and thrillers, and those with ‘Egyptian’ or Near Eastern themes, in which Ward was personally most interested. It was Ward’s ‘Chinese’ creation, the villainous Fu Manchu, leader of the secret society the ‘Si-Fan’, with whom he remains most strongly identified however. No interwar circulating library could afford not to stock books by Ward. Although Chinese themes had always had a niche in collections of mysteries and thriller novels, Ward’s were to prove by far the most successful. His inspiration lay squarely in the unapologetic opportunism of a professional hack writer: ‘Conditions for launching a Chinese villain on the market’, he is reputed to have said, ‘were ideal.’ (R. The brilliant and evil Chinese scientist Dr. Fu Manchu is on a hunt for the tomb of Genghis Khan, whose sword and mask are said to contain supernatural powers. British agent Nayland Smith and Sir Lionel Barton, an official at the British Museum, hope to find the tomb before Dr. Manchu can carry out his nefarious scheme of world domination. But shortly after Sir Lionel reveals his plans for an expedition, he is kidnapped by Manchu's henchmen. Barton's daughter Sheila is determined to continue her father's work and accompanies the team on the expedition, along with her fiance Terrence Granville. When Terry tries to set a trap for Dr. Manchu with a fake mask and sword, he is captured and finds himself caught precariously between Dr. Fu Manchu's ingenious tortures and the amorous attentions of the Doctor's daughter, Fah Lo See. To make matters worse, Dr. Fu Manchu has invented a terrifying "death ray."
The ever-popular character of Dr. Fu Manchu is the brainchild of Sax Rohmer (1883-1959). The English writer, whose real name is Arthur Sarsfield Ward, created thriller novels based on characters such as the female criminal mastermind Sumuru and the Parisian Detective Gaston Max. Rohmer's most successful series by far was the Fu Manchu novels, which spanned from 1913's
