Artemus Ward and Abe Lincoln
When Artemus Ward began touring with his comic lecture in 1861, his letters-to-the-editor were already famous. Abraham Lincoln admired the stories of the "Old Showman" who travels the country with his wax figure exhibit, narrates his adventures, and dispenses advice. In fact, on September 22, 1862, Lincoln read aloud a Ward sketch, "High-Handed Outrage at Utica" , to his cabinet. When Edwin M. Stanton, secretary of war, and others members appeared angry at humor in such serious times, Lincoln said, "Gentlemen...with the fearful strain that is upon me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die, and you need this medicine as much as I do." He then picked up the papers in front of him and read out the Emancipation Proclamation.
Stanton later wrote that "with great enthusiasm I arose, approached the President, extended my hand and said: 'Mr. President, if reading the chapters of Artemus Ward is a prelude to a deed such as this, the book should be filed among the archives of the nation and its author should be canonized.'" I am happiest when I am idle. I could live for months without performing any kind of labor, and at the expiration of that time I should feel fresh and vigorous enough to go right on in the same way for numerous more months. Why care for grammar as long as we are good? Let us all be happy, and live within our means, even if we have to borrow the money to do it with. Browne, was a bright flame that faded too quickly. Ward was a humorous writer who also developed extraordinary skills as a humorous speaker—he was in fact one of America's first standup comics. Mark Twain knew him, learned from him, followed in his footsteps, and had high praise for his standard lecture: "There are perhaps fifty subjects treated in it, and there is a passable point in every one of them, and a healthy laugh, also, for any of God's creatures who hath committed no crime, the ghastly memory of which debars him from smiling again while he lives. The man who is capable of listening to the 'Babes in the Wood' from beginning to end without laughing either inwardly or outwardly must have done murder, or at least meditated it, at some time during his life." Ward influenced many other noble literary spirits as well, including Albert Jay Nock and H.L. Mencken.
