Example of a single fore-edge painting.

The technique of fore-edge painting was developed in the middle of the 17th century, but was little practiced until the end of the 18th century, coming into an efflorescence in the 19th century. The method was to fan the fore-edge of the text block (the outer edge) and clamp it. Then, a water color painting would be executed on the fanned leaves. When dry, the fore-edge would most commonly be gilt, less commonly marbled. With this concealment, the existence of the painting would be unknown unless the fore-edge was fanned.
Example of a double fore-edge painting, in which a different scene is revealed when the text block is fanned in either direction.

Special Collections has acquired a significant collection of both single fore-edge paintings and double fore-edge paintings. The collection was dedicated to the memory of the late Miss Nancy Karnes Bird, former Head of Special Collections from 1960 to 1974. Some fine examples of this British art of decorating the gilded fore-edge of a book with a hidden painting in the collection are a seven-volume set of The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth (1846) with a different Lake District view on each volume; Vaughan's

English biographer, who is best known for THE COMPLEAT ANGLER (1653), a classic guide to the joys of fishing with over 300 new printings. In combines practical information about angling with folklore. The story of three friends, travelling through the English countryside, is enlivened by occasional songs, ballads, quotations from authors, and glimpses of an idyllic and now lost rural life. "Indeed, my good scholar, we may say of angling, as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, " Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did "; and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling."
(from The Compleat Angler, 1653-1655)

OED ); thus, Mr. Cruncher seems to be using an expression that would not yet be current in 1781 (Maxwell 458).
He was in no uneasiness concerning his getting into the house again, for it was full of lodgers, and the door stood ajar all night.
The Crunchers apparently live in a lodging-house, where rooms could be rented for specified intervals by anyone with sufficient means and inclination; the door would be left open to accommodate those who chose to come home at odd hours. The Dictionary of Daily Wants (1859) gives this account of Furnished lodgings London Gazette , the lodger does not pay the arrears of rent, the householder may sell the property to satisfy his claim, reserving any surplus money, and such goods as it may not be necessary to sell, and must keep them ready for delivery to the lodger when he shall demand them. (646) These remarks illustrate the extent to which a lodging house is composed of tenants who report to no one but themselves, and come and go at their own convenience.

The Compleat Angler, Or the Contemplative Man's Recreation by Izaak Walton London: Richard Marriot, 1653. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) wrote one of the bestselling books of all time. The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation is the third most frequently reprinted book in the English language after the Bible and the works of Shakespeare. Published in 1653, Walton's first edition was small and was published by his close friend and fellow parishioner, Richard Marriot of St. Dustan's. Subsequent editions of 1655 and 1661 were enlarged and elaborated. In 1676, Charles Cotton, a friend and pupil of Walton's wrote a collaborative addition - Second Part In all, there were five editions in Walton's lifetime. The NSL holds 36 editions in the rare book room and seven published in the 20th century in the main reading room Walton was born in Stafford, England. As a young man he apprenticed to a cloth merchant. In the 1610s he was the proprietor of an ironmonger's shop (a hardware store), but he became prosperous as a linen draper and retired 20 years later. He had acquired property in the countryside and lived much of his life near Winchester.
