Russ Ringsak
Tales of mystery, intrigue and roadside shenanigans from A Prairie Home Companion's resident writer and truck driver.
April 01, 2002
Spring in Dairy Country The spring load limits are in force now, to protect the roadbeds from heavy trucks. There are two tiers of state roads in Minnesota, the trunk highways they call 10-ton routes and the local 9-ton routes. From March 20 through May 15 all 9-ton roads automatically become 5-ton, which means 5 tons per axle.
It's a necessary spring thing, but the nature of the dairy business is that nothing in the sequence gets a break, not the cow nor the farmer nor the equipment, nor the roads they haul the milk over. It's more relentless than show business. So in a community based on the sale of milk to the outside world, a law officer isn't expected to be as quick to write tickets to a milk hauler as he might be to some old dog of a flatbed hauling a load of scrap iron. Milk trucks are heavy and the concept of slack has to kick in; folks look the other way for a while in the interest of the greater good. Even if it is hard on the roads. Purity has a tough time of it in the real world; if you enforce the axle limits to the letter the trucks have to make twice as many trips, take twice the time, burn twice the fuel and cause even more road damage; you pay more for transportation, the price of the milk goes up and the demand goes down and even more farmers are forced out of business. No one but a raving puritan would want those limits strictly applied to milk trucks. The other traffic, fine, but not the milk tankers. It's a clean example of a principle that applies in some way to everything from romance to running a railroad: you can't have a civilized society without slack, no matter what the true believers say.

June 02, 2004 Playing With Fire Yesterday I fired up my smoker. The pork shoulder was brined and seasoned/rubbed, the weather was perfect, and I had a real hankerin' for barbecue. About an hour into the cooking, I noticed that smoke was not issuing forth as it ought to have done. A glance at the thermometer showed the temperature was falling. So naturally, I grabbed a handful of hardwood charcoal chunks and opened the hatch. Ever see the movie " Backdraft The charcoal and wood-chunk fire had apparently been starved of oxygen (I later realized that I had not opened the vents. Dumb mistake.) Meanwhile, flammable fumes had apparently built up in the smoker... helped, I would imagine, by alcohol from the bourbon added (for flavor, of course) to the water pan inside. I opened the hatch... letting in the aforementioned oxygen. For just a fraction of a second, flame shot out of the opening. Even as brief as it was, it resembled the exhaust of an F-14's jet engine on afterburner. Fire like that could have done some damage if it had been directed at something flammable. Fortunately, my hand was in the right place to keep the flame from escaping into the wild.

racquetball #1
Well, the first day of racquetball went well... we almost thought we blew it when a couple of cute racquetball girls tried contest our court appointment, Kevin shrugged his shoulders and said that we had made the 6 o'clock court appointment and sent them packing to the squash courts... losers...
Kev won the first match, unsurprisingly as he is a seasoned veteran on racquetball court... I haven't played since Highschool... he played in college so, advantage Kev...
I almost skunked him in the second game due to exploiting a weakness in the Kevsters service return... deep into the corner on his backhand he has little luck making a competitive return... which allows me control of the rally, hopefully ending with a next good passing shot... Kev scored a point at 5-0 debunked my attempt at a 7-0 mercy rule finish... he made a valiant attempt to come back but I was in the zone and stopped him short...
By game 3 I was exhausted... we had only 15 minutes left so we decided to play until 6pm or 15 points... I think we made it to fifteen points, and it was Kevin who did it... I started making bad shots... my arms were just spent... I couldn't really make any aggressive shots because I couldn't keep the racquet face level... Kev converted match point with ease...

psxy connecting 2 points as an arc?
From
Date
When I'm working in some projection, and I ask psxy (or, say
psclip) to connect a list of points, doesn't it
work in the projection's space, so that a line drawn
between two points on the same latitude for example,
will be drawn as a straight line? Apparently not.
The two commands below produce a Eckert IV map with
a red line, but the red line is curved, like an
moustache with upcurved ends. I *do* understand that
the line is showing the distortion of the projection, but intuitively I thought that if I gave psxy or psclip a list of points to draw/clip, it would connect them in a line which makes sense in the projection I'm in in other words the shortest possible distance between them, I guess. [Also, does the psxy man page warning about including a Pole apply here? I interpret it to mean a region or path that encloses the pole, not merely includes it as one of the points.]

Columbo was often likened to Valentino-as this fan magazine photo illustrates
  • Gus Arnheim and His Ambassadors ; ca. 1929, Vitaphone/Warner Bros.
This 10 minute short features the Arnheim orchestra, famous for their appearances at the Ambassador Hotel's Cocoanut Grove. 21 year old Russ is featured playing a jazzy violin solo, and sings as part of a trio with two other members of the orchestra. Interestingly, Gus Arnheim gets no close ups! I'm not sure as to the actual release date of this short, it may have come later in 1929, but thought this a good place to start. This short is available on laserdisc as part of the boxed set The Vitaphone Project. Wolf Song ,Paramount Pictures
    With Gary Cooper and Lupe Velez. Directed by Victor Fleming (Russ' singing voice doubles for Coop's, and he appears in the film as Ambrosia Gutierrez.. This is considered to be Columbo's 'screen debut'. The Street Gir l;

Date: Sat-Apr-24-04 at 16:51 hr Hi Guys..
Just back from Canada, and came late to the post down the way about the M48/60 thing (I'd have got that one, too, a frequent mistake with the turtle turret on the early M60's) and the bit about pics...
I highly recommend using Photobucket for a free pic posting service. It's free (sure, they would appreciate donations, but it's optional) EASY (just register an email and password) and submit anything (securely) and it resizes to 250KB max so you can improve upon the res allowed by most direct posting sites...including this one. They make it easy to copy the lines (3 options) for posting a link, also. I get lazy and just resize to this site myself a lot, but if you want to hype the resolution a bit, use photobucket. I use it for several sites that don't allow direct posting for reasons of bandwidth, usually. I'll attach an example....M551 at the MVTF...Mrs. Curmudgeon in the background...

There does seem to be a bug in icc- I've posted on intel's message boards and they've confirmed a problem. There is a work around - here is the post: in addition- I got these helpful instructions from the folks on the mysql-packagers list- I specifically asked about 4.0.18 so they should work- I have successfully compiled 4.1.1 several times and the binaries passed the tests although I'm having trouble with the benchmark suite. good luck yonah Walter Andreas wrote: http://f.web.de/?mc=021157
