Reverend John Mitford (1781-1859) from the British Library, London
10 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide John Mitford (1781-1859) was one of that remarkable breed of English clergymen that people the novels of Oliphant and Trollope. An Oxford graduate with a steady stream of income from livings in Suffolk, he indulged his passion for English poetry in a variety of extraclerical activities. He built up a famous library of English poetry which he drew upon in his subsequent writing. He edited the first accurate edition of The Poems of Thomas Gray (1814) and later edited Gray's Works He was employed by Pickering to edit a number of the Aldine editions of English poets including Cowper (1830), Goldsmith (1831), Milton (1832), Dryden (1833), Swift (1834), Prior (1835) and Spenser (1839). He edited the correspondence of Horace Walpole and William Mason (1851) and became an advocate of landscape gardening. Most famously of all, he served as Editor of the

Magazine Antiques
April, 2003 by Alfred Mayor
A Capital Collection: Houghton Hall and the Hermitage, ed. Larissa Dukelskaya and Andrew Moore (Yale University Press, 800-288-2129), $75.00 (hardcovers). Catherine the Great established the Hermitage picture gallery in Saint Petersburg in 1764. To fill it, this relentless acquisitor bought six large collections of paintings in rapid succession. Ten years after it was founded, the Hermitage had 2,080 pictures. The story of the next large addition, 204 pictures collected by Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745), in 1779 is the subject of this encyclopedic book. Walpole had already collected 113 paintings at his house Houghton Hall in Norfolk by 1736, a year after its completion. He then added more pictures from his houses in London and Chelsea, and bought still more. However, Walpole was hardly a languid aesthete, for he was also very fond of hunting and maintained packs of hounds at Houghton and at his hunting lodge in Richmond. Apparently he also had 20/20 vision for the ladies and a salty vocabulary when in the company of men. In short, he was a regular guy interested in having a good time and damn the expense. Incidently he assembled an enviable collection of pictures.

Harry Timmermann

Lewis Walpole Library brings 'treasure' to BAC
By Bidisha Banerjee A Treasure House in Farmington: The Lewis Walpole Library . The exhibit showcases the highlights of collector William Sheldon Lewis', Class of 1918, hoard of fellow collector Horace Walpole's goodies. Joan Sussler, one of the curators of the exhibition, characterizes Lewis as an independently wealthy man who had the self-discipline, energy, and money to purchase most of the relics (such as books, manuscripts, art, and furnishings) from the original collection of Horace Walpole (1717-1797). Walpole is famous today for somewhat dubious reasons: he was the youngest son of Robert Walpole, the first prime minister of England, and he wrote the first-ever Gothic novel, The Castle of Otronto . Lewis' collection, however, casts him in a different light. It stridently underscores Walpole's historical importance as a collector of artifacts that are deeply interesting to both scholars and to the everyday viewer. This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. My warmest thanks go to a colleague of mine, Dr. Masahiro Komatsu (Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University), who was kind enough to write the C++ program.

The Castle of Otranto , published on Christmas Eve in 1764 (the year in which James Watt perfected the steam engine, thus laying the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution), more-or-less began the Gothic as we know it. Initally accepted rather favorably, Otranto was villified by the press once it was revealed, in the second edition, that the work was not in fact a translation of an old manuscript but the contemporary creation of the politically and socially well-connected son of a Prime Minister. Walpole's drama The Mysterious Mother , never performed in his lifetime, dealt with another topic that would attract much (scandalized) attention in the Romantic period: incest.
