Between 1739 and 1741 Horace Walpole toured France and Italy with his friend the poet Thomas Gray (1716-71). On his return to England, Walpole become a Member of Parliament Shortly after taking up his seat, Walpole leased (1747) then bought (1749) Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, London. Following his purchase, Strawberry Hill was remodelled in Gothic style, something resembling the set for a Hammer Horror movie. It was the Gothic atmosphere of Strawberry Hill that led to the writing of The Castle of Otranto . One night, early June 1764, Walpole fell asleep in the gloom of Strawberry Hill and had a nightmare. The nightmare became The Castle of Otranto Horace Walpole: I waked one morning at the beginning of last June from a dream, of which all I could recover was, that I had thought myself in an ancient castle (a very natural dream for a head filled like mine with Gothic story) and that on the uppermost bannister of a great staircase I saw a gigantic hand in armour. In the evening I sat down and began to write, without knowing in the least what I intended to say or relate. The work grew on my hands, and I grew fond of it - add that I was very glad to think of anything rather than politics - in short I was so engrossed in my tale, which I completed in less than two months, that one evening I wrote from the time I had drunk my tea, about six o'clock, till half an hour after one in the morning, when my hand and fingers were so weary, that I could not hold the pen to finish the sentence, but left Matilda and Isabella talking, in the middle of a paragraph.

Dreams, magic terrors, spells of mighty power, Witches, and ghosts who rove at midnight hour. Horace What do you think of my having written, in the space of ten weeks, a romance of between three and four hundred pages octavo? It is called 'The Monk' ... Mathew Lewis, letter to Frances Lewis, 23 September 1794 Mathew Lewis (1775-1818), commonly known as Monk Lewis due to his authorship of The Monk (1796), was educated at Westminster and Christ College, Oxford. Whilst still a student at Oxford, Lewis visited Paris (1791) and Weimar (1792). In Weimar, Lewis met Goethe. Originally published in 1795, The Monk was a sensation. It was savagely attacked by the critics for its sexual explicitness and blasphemous nature. In subsequent editions, Lewis, now a Member of Parliament, was forced to tone down the text. There was an attempted legal action against Lewis for his attack on public morality. As with all such 'obscene' publications, the public flocked to buy it in order to express their moral outrage. Riding on the success of The Monk , Lewis embarked on a second career as a dramatist.

Walpole, Horace: The letters of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford. London, 1840. 6 v. Horace Walpole , 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), was a noted author, historian, connoisseur, and amateur architect. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1741 to 1768, and was a keen observer of politics and society. Though his Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762-63 4 v.) is still useful to art historians, and the Castle of Otranto (1764) is a minor landmark in literary history, being the first Gothic novel in English, Walpole's fame now rests on his letters, of which over 3,000 survive. Historically, they are 18th century England's truest record, portraying social life, public affairs, and contemporary arts and letters with wit, vividness, and accuracy. As an architect, he is most famous for his country house Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, which he remodeled into a miniature Gothic castle. Horace Walpole. Engraving by James McArdell after the portrait by Joshua Reynolds (1757). In: Walpole, Horace: Horace Walpole's Correspondence.

39. Horace Walpole By Ramsay
Oil on canvas. Horace......Artist Allan Ramsay (17131784). Title Horace Walpole, Fourth Earlof Orford (1717-1797), ca 1759.
http://www.library.yale.edu/Walpole/BAC/HW_Ramsay-Z.htm
Artist: Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) Title: Horace Walpole, Fourth Earl of Orford (1717-1797), ca 1759 Description: Oil on canvas Horace Walpole was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, who served as prime minister under George I and George II. Like his father, Horace was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, followed by the Grand Tour. In 1741 he was elected to parliament but chose to observe events and record them for posterity rather than become active in politics. He wrote the first history of British art and the first Gothic romance, entitled The Castle of Otranto. He was an antiquarian, a collector, and owned a private printing press. Strawberry Hill, his villa in Twickenham, Middlesex, was remodeled in a Gothic style of his own invention, and became famous throughout Europe. But above all, he is esteemed for his vast correspondence and his Memoirs of King George II and George III that reveal many aspects of his age for today's scholars and historians. Ramsay's preliminary sketch of this picture in the National Gallery of Scotland shows Walpole sitting at a table with a quill pen, only the top of which is now visible. On 17 October 1758 he wrote to Lady Hervey, AYour Ladyship, I hope, will not think that such a strange thing as my own picture seems of consequence enough to me to write a letter about it: but obeying your commands does seem so; and lest you should return and think I had neglected it, I must say that I have come to town three several times on purpose, but Mr Ramsay (I will forgive him) has been constantly out of townso much for that.

View Shopping Cart/CheckoutWinner, 1994 PRINT CERTIFICATE OF DESIGN EXCELLENCE The first trade edition of these wildly imaginative tales from the eighteenth-century originator of the Gothic genre. Hieroglyphic Tales, seven fanciful tales by Horace Walpole, have a fanciful history of their own: privately printed in an edition of seven, they were distributed to a few friends only after their author's death. Walpole himself offers this description in his preface: "The Hieroglyphic Tales were undoubtedly written a little before the creation of the world, and have ever since been preserved, by oral tradition, in the mountains of Crampcraggiri, an uninhabited island, not yet discovered." Newly discovered, these tales are now available, alongside equally fanciful illustrations by Jill McElmurry, in a charming gift edition, proving true Walpole's prediction that the Hieroglyphic Tales "will be treated with due reverence some hundred years hence."
