Biographical note
Politician, writer and forerunner of the Gothic revival. He was born in London, the youngest son of British Prime Minister Robert Walpole. Walpole's home, Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, was a fanciful concoction of neo-Gothic which began a new architectural trend. In 1764, he published his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, setting a literary trend to go with the architecture. From 1762 on, he published his Anecdotes of Painting in England, based on George Vertue's manuscript notes. His memoirs of the Georgian social and political scene, though heavily biased, are a useful primary source for historians. More ...

Sin embargo, Walpole es conocido ante todo por su novela El castillo de Otranto (1764); repleta de elementos sobrenaturales, es una de las primeras obras del género conocido como relato gótico. Escribió también La madre misteriosa (1768), una tragedia sobre el tema del incesto. Im Jahr 1969 entstand in Mannington Hall /Norfolk, dem Besitz der Familie Walpole, mit Hilfe des Rosenfachmanns Peter Beales der "Heritage Rose Garden".
