CRAWFORDSVILLE As bombs fell on the capital of Iraq, I took a little trip to visit the grave of the man who saved Washington, D.C. He was Gen. Lew Wallace, one of Indiana's most famous sons. His 35-foot-tall stone obelisk stands in Oak Hill Cemetery. The inscription reads: "Lewis Wallace, 1827-1905 ... 'I would not give one hour as a soul for a thousand years of life as a man. Ben-Hur.' " He was a lawyer, state senator, artist, inventor, diplomat, territorial governor, musician and author of the 1880 blockbuster, Ben-Hur He was a lieutenant in the Mexican War, and during the Civil War became the Union Army's youngest major-general at age 34. COVINGTON Lew Wallace was a Civil War general, a territorial governor, U.S. minister to Turkey and author of one of the most popular books ever written: Ben-Hur. But first, he was a young lawyer in this Fountain County community. Thanks to a recently awarded $50,000 federal grant, the four-room, brick County Clerk's Building that housed his first law office will be restored. The work begins in October. "It's uncanny how this has all come along. It's almost too good to be true," says Carol Freese, a local antiques dealer who is co-chair of the project. The building faces Fourth Street. A ramshackle frame addition with a collapsed roof has been removed. This fall and winter, new metal roofing will be installed and repairs will be made to joists, brickwork, windows and chimneys. Later, a heating and cooling system will be installed, and volunteers will help do decorating. The interior will be furnished as it was when Wallace knew it, with desks, stools, bookcases, law books and ledgers from the 1840s and 1850s.

Several years following Jesus' birth, Judah Ben-Hur was one day on the streets speaking to his childhood companion, Messala. Messala had grown up in Judea, but five years earlier had left to study in Rome. He had changed considerably in those years, and since his return Judah had found it difficult to speak with him. A wall had been cast up between them. Now, while Messala bragged, Judah grew more and more angry at his friend's new arrogance.
