EDGAR WALLACE ON THE SPOT by Edgar Wallace This is a grim, roaring story of Chicago's gang wars and the 'rackets'. The relentless fury of their feuds creates almost unbearable suspense and tense excitement. The Big Shot, Tony Perelli, is a figure of cold brutality and enslaving power. His ruthlessness burns into the hearts of his gunmen, turning them into machines that have to kill. A raw, chilling excitement emphasizes the humanity of those caught in Perelli's dominance - Minn Lee, his girl; Angelo Verona, his gang lieutenant; and the weak Jimmy, a tragic figure who finds his courage in a desperate climax. First published in Great Britain by John Long Ltd. 1931

by Edgar Wallace About the Author: EDGAR WALLACE (1875-1932) was born in London. His parents died when he was very young and he was sent to a workhouse; but a few years later he was adopted by a fish porter who sent him to a board school in Peckham. As he grew up he tried various jobs: in a rubber factory, on a Grimsby trawler, as a milk-boy, and as a newspaper seller. He joined the army in 1899 and was sent to South Africa. At the end of the war, in 1902, he decided to turn to journalism and returned to South Africa as war correspondent for Reuter's agency. His first story was The Four Just Men which he published at his own expense in 1905. After this, for the space of twenty years, Wallace wrote or dictated about 150 novels of which over thirty have now been made into films or plays. He found his true metier in 'thrillers', peculiarly his own creation, which he himself called "pirate stories in modern dress."

"From King Kong to The Gorilla Gang ; from Bela Lugosi to Klaus Kinski; from Alfred Vohrer to Jess Franco, the man with "little" lasting literary value has spawned a vast and satisfying cinematic legacy..." What do King Kong, Bela Lugosi, Klaus Kinski, and Christoper Lee all have in common? Give up? by Edgar Wallace
from Again Sanders D ON M URDOCK came to the territories with three guns and a breaking heart. At least he had tried to keep the rifts wedged open and still preserved the similitude of hopeless grief and .unconquerable despair. It had been easy enough that night when the New York skyline was falling astern and he had looked over the side of the Berengaria and had seen, almost on the verge of tears, the pilot's hazardous climb to the waiting boat. This man, thought Donald, swallowing a lump in his throat, was going back to a woman who loved him. A sane, shrewd mother of children, who went to church on Sundays and scoffed at ghosts. He could not imagine Mr. Pilot and Mrs. Pilot facing one another, trembling with fury over the matter of manifestations. All that sort of stuff, mostly illogical, but very, very, poignant. So Donald went tragically to the wilds and made a will before leaving New York, leaving half of his four million dollars to Jane Fellaby and the other half to found a society for the suppression of Spiritualism. Mr. Commissioner Sanders did not like visitors in the Territories. They were a responsibility, and usually he ran them up to Chubiri on the lower river (which is as safe as Bond Street and much safer than Broadway) and sent them back to the ship with a thrilling sense of having faced fearful dangers.

British novelist, playwright, and journalist who produced popular detective and suspense stories and was in his time "the king" of the modern thriller. Wallace's literary output - 175 books, 24 plays, and countless articles and review sketches - have undermined his reputation as a fresh and original writer. Moreover, the author was a wholehearted supporter of Victorian and early Edwardian values and mores, which are now considered in some respects politically incorrect. "This little autobiography is in itself a tribute to the system under which we live. There cannot be much wrong with the society which made possible the rise of J.H. Thomas or Edgar Wallace, that gave 'Jamie' Brown the status of a king in Scotland and put Robertson at the War Office as Chief of the Imperial General Staff."
(from Wallace's introduction to his autobiography, People; Edgar Wallace: The Biography of a Phenomenon, 1926)

Wallace was born in London, the son of actors Mary Jane Richards and T. H. Edgar. Handed over as a baby to the wife of a fish porter to raise, Wallace had a difficult childhood. He worked as a deep-sea fisherman and a builder's laborer and at age 18 enlisted in the army. Sent to South Africa in 1896, he began to write songs, poems, and articles for periodicals. A journalistic scoop, which enabled the Daily Mail to announce the end of the Boer War (1889-1902) in advance of an official news release, led to his employment as a reporter on his return.
