R ichard Wagner transformed opera, establishing a unique artistic style that unified drama, text, and music. A man convinced of his own greatness, Wagner was a ruthless, selfish individual whose only redeeming quality was an absolute devotion to his music. Born in Germany on May 22, 1813, Wagner might have been the son of Karl Wagner, a police official. However, it is felt that Wagner’s mother had an affair with Ludwig Geyer, a family friend, and that Richard Wagner was actually the son of Geyer. Ironically, Karl Wagner passed away six months after the birth of the child, and Wagner’s mother quickly married Geyer. Some believe that Geyer was a Jew, making Wagner’s personal and musical commitment to the Nazis a disconcerting fact. Geyer encouraged Wagner’s love for the arts, and the young boy was initially drawn to literature, not music. After being mesmerized by a performance of Beethoven’s works, Wagner became determined to study music. He neglected his academic studies, and began composing orchestral works. Wagner also became adept at drinking, gambling, and chasing girls. Music was his oniy healthy pursuit, and his formal training was minimal. He spent six months studying with Theodor Weinlig, the director of the Thonimasschu

One supreme fact which I have discovered is that it is not willpower, but fantasy-imagination that creates. Imagination is the creative force. Imagination creates reality. Joy is not in things, it is in us. I write music with an exclamation point! Richard Wagner, a musician who wrote music which is better than it sounds.

Richard Wagner was a German essayist and perhaps the most influential composer of the 19th century. His works and opinions have generated a great deal of controversy, and a brief summary of his life and place in history is practically impossible. It has been said that more has been written about Wagner than perhaps any other historical figure with the exception of Christ and Muhammad the Prophet. Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig on May 22, 1813 and died in Venice on February 13, 1883. His father was a minor city official and died when Richard was 6 months old. In August 1814 his mother married the actor Ludwig Geyer (who may actually have been the boy's father). Early-on Wagner thought he would be a playwright, and turned to music originally to enhance the dramas he wanted to write and stage. But it was his operas to his own libretti, styled by him as "music dramas", that came to change radically the concept of stage music and, to some extent, music itself. Early musical influences were performances of Carl Marie von Weber 's Der Freischuetz and Beethoven's Fidelio . Among other strong acknowledged influences was the philosopher Schopenhauer

B As our readers will doubtless be glad to become acquainted with the life of a man who has absorbed so much attention amongst artists for so many years, we quote a memoir of the composer from The Musical Review, written by one thoroughly conversant with the facts of his career:- furor Teutonicus, en vogue operatic spectacle, sobriquet Lohengrin, the son of Parcival, King of the Grail, leaves his blissful abode, to save Elsa , Princess of Brabant, from a false accusation of having killed her young brother. The love of Elsa and her deliverer forms the main subject of the drama, the tragic key-note being touched when Elsa , despite her promise of implicit faith, asks the name and abode of the mystical knight. This wild craving of Elsa bourgeois counterfeits, in the manner of the antique satyr-drama. The second version of the libretto, however, has been considerably modified. The worthy burghers of the beautiful German city appear in a more favourable light, the formal philistinism of their poetic doings being leavened by an admixture of true homely feeling. Hans Sachs, the poet and shoemaker, round whom, as their centre figure the numerous dramatis personae savants from all parts of the world. For more than a quarter of a century the work had been gradually assuming the form in which we know it at present, this evolutionary process continuing concurrently with other labours of an exhaustive nature. The foundation stone of the Wagner Theatre was laid in 1872, and the building is a durable testimony to the revolutionary ideas of its architect in the matter of theatrical construction. Nothing was wanting to render the production of the trilogy and unexampled success. The scenic arrangements, by Herr Brandt, of Dresden, were novel in design and beauty; the invisible orchestra, under Herr Richter, was pronounced by friends and foes alike inimitable; and the principal artists included the most eminent performers of the leading German opera-houses.

    Wagner, Richard (1813 - 1883)
Wagner was a remarkable innovator both in harmony and in the structure of his work, creating his own version of the Gesamtkunstwerk, dramatic compositions in which the arts were brought together into a single unity. As a man he was prepared to sacrifice his family and friends in the cause of his own music and his overt anti-semitism has attracted unwelcome attention to ideas that are remote from his real work as a musician. In the later part of his career Wagner enjoyed the support of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was finally able to establish his own theatre and festival at the Bavarian town of Bayreuth. He developed the use of the Leitmotiv (leading motif) as a principle of musical unity, his dramatic musical structure depending on the interweaving of melodies or fragments of melody associated with characters, incidents or ideas in the drama.
